Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in political persuasion, Dr. Vatz has earned distinction as a professor emeritus with Towson University. From 1974 until his retirement in 2023, he focused his efforts on engaging in a great deal of writing as well as working with students, giving numerous presentations on the field of political communication. Additionally, he lent his expertise for decades as a valued member of the National Communication Association and currently to the Eastern Communication Association.
Prior to his most recent role, after being graduated Magna cum Laude at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Vatz began his career as an instructor with Penn State at McKeesport in 1969 and with North Carolina State University in 1973. He continued his career as an assistant professor for Towson State University in 1974 and was promoted to an associate professor in 1982 and a full professor in 1989. Over the course of his career, he contributed hundreds of articles and reviews to his field, including co-authoring Thomas Szasz: Primary Values and Major Contentions in 1983 and, as a single author, The Only Authentic of Persuasion: the Agenda-Spin Model initially in 2017 along with new editions and the co-editor of Thomas S. Szasz: the Man and His Ideas.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Vatz has two awards appointed in his honor, one by Towson University, The Richard E. Vatz Best Debater Award Endowment, and one by the Eastern Communication Association, The Richard E. Vatz Agenda-Spin Persuasion Award. He has also received a Teacher of the Year Award in 2002 and four Outstanding Teaching Grants from Towson University's Student Government Association, making him the most awarded TU professor for this honor, and he won the Teaching Fellow Award from the Eastern Communication Association in 2003. In recognition of his services to Towson University, he was honored with Governor's Citations for Achievements in Higher Education and Service in 2004 and 2022 as well as a Towson University President's Award for Distinguished Service in 2004, the highest award in the University. Added to these, he received an award for his university lecture on "Psychiatric Rhetoric and the Myths Involving the Insanity Plea" from Hillsdale College in 2013 and has spoken at many venues on political persuasion. He was also the first winner of the "Towson's Elite" Night, adding to his many honors from the university.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Vatz earned a Bachelor of Arts in sociology in 1969 and a Master of Arts in rhetoric and communication in 1970, both from the University of Pittsburgh. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in rhetoric and communication from the same institution in 1976.
Within the coming years, Dr. Vatz intends to continue writing, engaging more in articles rather than larger book projects, and commenting for various national and local media.
