Mr. Smith is distinguished for nearly 34 years of service as the Mayor of Newark, California, a bayside city in Alameda County of approximately 50,000 residents. He was elected the city's leader in 1978 and held the position continuously until 2011. In addition to his role as a public official, Mr. Smith was employed in a series of challenging and respected positions throughout that time.
Before venturing onto his vocational path, Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Business Administration in industrial management from Michigan Technological University in 1967. Upon graduating, he accepted a position as Industrial Engineer, and was promoted to the position of Plant Manager of Ethyl Corporation, in their growing division of plastic business. In 1979, one year after winning his first mayoral election, Mr. Smith was recruited to serve as vice president of Oatey Company, a manufacturer of products for the industrial and residential plumbing industries. He excelled in that role for nearly three decades, departing in 2006 to serve as Executive Director of the Ohlone College Foundation in Fremont and Newark, California.
Since 2012, Mr. Smith has been retired from both his City of Newark mayoral seat and his leadership position with Ohlone College. He currently holds the titles of Mayor Emeritus for Newark and Executive Director Emeritus for the Ohlone College Foundation. In his retirement, he enjoys spending time with his family, including two children, eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Performing pro bono consulting work within his community, Mr. Smith credits his Christian faith with his success in all endeavors.
