Dr. Gao initially began her vocation working as a student aide at the Polytechnic Institute of New York University from 2010 to 2011. She was then active as a data analyst of the central operation control center at Shanghai Metro in 2011, followed by a post of a traffic engineer at the New York City Department of Transportation from 2012 until 2014. During this time, she also garnered expertise as a transportation intern and a traffic engineer at the URS Corporation. In her career related endeavors, Dr. Gao has authored such works as, "Leveraging Big Data to Detect, Quantify and Evaluate the Impacts of Short-Term Traffic Disruptions in a Connected Urban Transportation System" and "Time lag effects of COVID-19 policies on transportation systems: A comparative study of New York City and Seattle."
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Gao pursued an education at Tongji University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in physics in 2010. She continued her academic efforts at New York University, earning a Master of Science in transportation planning and engineering in 2012, followed by a Doctor of Philosophy from New York University in 2020. As a commitment to her field, Dr. Gao has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the Intelligent Transportation Society of America and the Women's Transportation Seminar, among others.

Additionally, Dr. Gao is proud to be working on a mobile accessible application for individuals with vision disabilities, which will assist them in navigating signalized intersections.
