Throughout the course of his professional career, he has experienced a range of opportunities, from developing and managing engineering departments and improving professional quality to increasing profitability and building and maintaining client relations. He also frequently served as a mentor to other engineers and technicians. Among his most memorable accomplishments, Dr. Khandker notes his involvement in building the 15.5-mile-longSaudi-Bahrain King Fahd Causeway, one of the largest causeways in the world connecting Khobar, Saudi Arabia, and Al Jasra, Bahrain. He also garnered experience in numerous other engineering and construction-related projects ranging from $50,000 to over $700 million.

Among them, he was a technical advisor at NexelT Inc., the vice president and program manager at Lakeshore Engineering, and the district manager and senior geotechnical professional of the geotechnical and materials division at Professional Services Industries in the Detroit area. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Khandker was a manager for the geotechnical division at Somat Engineering Inc. and the director for the geotechnical and materials division at Al Muhandis Nizar Kurdi (Al-Muhandis Company).
Dr. Khandker had the opportunity to teach academia as an adjunct faculty at Wayne State University in Detroit, teaching several graduate-level courses in the civil engineering department from 2012 to 2020.He also led a senior-level course at Lawrence Technological University in Southfield, Michigan, and a comprehensive statics course at Beijing University of Chemical Technology. As a scholar, Dr. Khandker published several technical papers.
Invested in his community, Dr. Khandker has been very active with the Bangladeshi American Public Affairs Committee (BAPAC) in various roles, including as a founding director, and has been invested in several socio-economic, racial equity, citizenship, and health-related initiatives for the Bangladeshi community in the Detroit and Hamtramck areas since 2004. The BAPAC notably promotes the value and principles of the U.S. Constitution among Bangladeshi Americans and enhances awareness of their rights and responsibilities as U.S. citizens. Dr. Khandker also serves as the director of the Council of Asian-Pacific Americans, a coalition aiming to enhance awareness and sensitivity to Asian-Pacific American concerns.
Dr. Khandker received a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering from the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology in 1967 and a Doctor of Philosophy in civil engineering from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada, with the assistance of a scholarship in 1975.He also received a professional engineering license in Canada, Michigan and West Virginia and a leadership certificate through the Norman Y. Mineta Leadership Institute.
To remain aware of developments in his industry, Dr. Khandker is a member and past president of the Metro Detroit chapter of the Michigan Society of Professional Engineers (MSPE). The organization recognized his work as a two-time recipient of an Engineer of the Year Award in 2003 and 2011. Dr. Khandker also received recognition with a Certificate of Entrepreneurship from Eastern Michigan University and a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition in 2012.
