Mr. Shelton also now serves as the organization's board chair.
Mr. Shelton previously served as a partner at Venable LLP in Baltimore from 1974 to 2010. A highly-ranked law firm, he oversaw many complex matters and high-profile cases. Moreover, Mr. Shelton was noted for his contributions to the proceedings of the impeachment of President Richard Nixon in 1974 as an associate special counsel on the House judiciary committee. Years later, during the summer of 2018, he also helped record the material for the Nixon Library in New York. Among many career highlights throughout his extensive career, Mr. Shelton recalls his role in saving the Greater Southeast Hospital in Washington, D.C., from bankruptcy, which services a minority neighborhood.
Heavily involved in his community, Mr. Shelton has served as a citizen member of the Board of Finance for the City of Baltimore since 2022 and trustee for the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, the Dome Corporation for Hopkins Institution, and Sterling College in Vermont. Among various other roles, he has been recognized as a trustee emeritus and board chair of the Maryland Institute College of Art. Moreover, Mr. Shelton is a permanent member of the Fourth Circuit Judicial Conference.
Mr. Shelton graduated from Oberlin College with a Bachelor of Arts in history, cum laude, in 1963. He subsequently garnered a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Harvard University in 1966. Mr. Shelton has been admitted to practice by the Maryland Bar Association, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Remaining abreast of current trends in the field, Mr. Shelton was also active as an executive committee member of the Baltimore Bar Association.
