Giacco chaired professor of chemical engineering, he also serves as the co-director of the Center for Composite Materials & Structures on campus. Dr. Baird previously held the Harry C. Wyatt professorship of chemical engineering.
Besides teaching, Dr. Baird has lent his expertise to other organizations as a consultant. Before transitioning into higher education, he devoted several years to fieldwork as a research engineer at Montasanto Textile Company.
As a seasoned researcher and prominent engineer who is known worldwide for his contributions to polymer processing, composites processing, polymer fluid mechanics, heat transfers, fluid mechanics, and numerical methods, Dr. Baird's extensive studies have garnered him more than $40 million in research funding and numerous U.S. patents. He has disseminated many of his research findings in approximately 200 peer-reviewed journal articles. He has also co-authored several textbooks, including "Polymer Processing: Principles and Design" with Dimitris Collias in 1999, which is still being utilized today. Moreover, Dr. Baird has participated in many presentations, speaking engagements, and workshops in his field.
Dr. Baird graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Science in chemical and materials engineering in 1969 and a Master of Science in materials and mechanics in 1971. He subsequently attended the University of Wisconsin at Madison, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in engineering in 1974. Dr. Baird received numerous certifications, including in numerical methods, basic fluid mechanics, polymer fluid mechanics, composites processing, polymer processing, and chemical engineering. Additionally, he garnered teaching certification.
As a testament to his dedication, Dr. Baird was elected as a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. He is also a member of the Society of Rheology, the Society of Plastic Engineers, the Polymer Processing Society, and the American Chemical Society.
In light of his accomplishments, Dr. Baird received a Breslin Award from the varsity alumni at Michigan State University. He was also honored to win a Research Award and an International Award from the Society of Plastics Engineers, in addition to several teaching and excellence in research awards.
