Dr. Peter Garo Antreasian is recognized for his expertise in Deep Space Navigation with KinetX, Inc

With the expanding opportunities of civil and commercial deep space endeavors in the coming years, Dr. Antreasian aims to be at the forefront of mankind's exploration of the solar system.

LITTLETON, CO, June 16, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Peter Garo Antreasian, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.

Throughout his 30-year career, Dr. Antreasian was fortunate to have explored the asteroids, planets and moons of our solar system as a key navigation team member of NASA's deep space missions. Leveraging these three decades of excellence in aerospace engineering, Dr. Antreasian has earned distinction as an expert in orbit determination. In this capacity, he is a navigation team chief and flight director for KinetX, Inc. Since 2013, he has focused his efforts on overseeing the navigation of the OSIRIS REx mission, the NASA asteroid sample and return mission launched in 2016, which aims to bring a sample back from the near-Earth asteroid, Bennu, in September 2023. Additionally, he is a valued member of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Astronautics Society.

Prior to his current role, Dr. Antreasian began his career as an orbit determination analyst and member of the Galileo navigation team at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in 1992 planning the 1993 Galileo spacecraft encounter with the main belt asteroid, 243-Ida. After the Galileo prime mission ended, he went on to become the orbit determination team manager for the Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR) mission from 1997 to 2001, Mars Odyssey in 2001, and the Cassini mission to Saturn from 2003 until 2008. When the NEAR mission at 433-Eros was coming to an end in 2001, Dr. Antreasian designed, planned and led the end-of-mission operations with several close flyovers of the surface ending with the first-ever landing of a spacecraft on an asteroid.

Before joining the Space Navigation and Flight Dynamics (SNAFD) group at KinetX in 2013, Dr. Antreasian led the navigation of the twin orbiters of NASA's GRAIL mission into synchronous orbit at the Moon in 2012. In addition to the NEAR landing on Eros, Dr. Antreasian was instrumental in the delivery of the Galileo probe to the atmosphere of Jupiter in 1995, the landing of the Huygens probe on Titan in 2005, the Mars Exploration Rovers on Mars in 2004 and the touch and go of OSIRIS-REx on 101955-Bennu in October 2020. Peter has earned the NASA's Medals for Exceptional Achievement of navigating the twin GRAIL spacecraft to the moon for the highly successful low-altitude gravity survey and for Exceptional Public Service for contributions to NASA's Deep Space navigation enterprises and outstanding leadership for the OSIRIS-REx mission.

To prepare for his professional journey, Dr. Antreasian earned a Bachelor of Science in aerospace engineering from Purdue University in 1984. He then attained a Master of Science in the same area of study from The University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and a Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Colorado in 1992. His PhD dissertation topic, "Precision Radiation Force Modeling for the TOPEX/Poseidon Mission" helped raise the bar for precision orbit determination with the development of high-resolution finite element solar and spacecraft thermal radiation force models.

With the expanding opportunities of civil and commercial deep space endeavors in the coming years, Dr. Antreasian aims to be at the forefront of mankind's exploration of the solar system. In his new role as KinetX flight director, Dr. Antreasian plans to make a positive influence to the astronautical engineering community and to the young SNAFD staff at KinetX with his knowledge and lessons learned from his vast deep space navigation experience. Accounting for his success thus far, he credits the support and expertise of his fellow team members, recognizing they would not have accomplished these incredible deep space achievements without their collaborated efforts. Dr. Antreasian also credits his parents for supporting his interest in space exploration during his youth and his wife and four children for their continued support during his busy schedules and critical mission operations.
