Dr. Metzinger is a prominent physician who splits her time serving as the chief of ophthalmology at Southeast Louisiana Veterans Healthcare System since 2008 and as an associate professor of ophthalmology at Tulane University School of Medicine since 2013. Affiliated with Tulane since 2001, she formerly served in several other faculty positions, including as an assistant professor in ophthalmology and specialist in cornea and external diseases between 2008 and 2013.
Leveraging more than two decades of experience in her career, Dr. Metzinger previously served as an associate and specialist in cornea and external diseases at Singer-Brint Custom Vision and as a specialist in cornea, external diseases, refractive surgery, and cataract surgery at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation. She also had the opportunity to represent the National Basketball Association's New Orleans Hornets as the team's ophthalmologist.
Throughout her professional career, Dr. Metzinger has been instrumental in helping build several Veteran's Affairs clinics and was responsible for bringing the first corneal transplants to the island of Grenada. She has also served as a moderator, coordinator, and panel member for various professional events and has presented at multiple symposiums. Moreover, Dr. Metzinger has contributed numerous articles to professional publications and is serving on the Board of the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology. Looking toward the future, she aims to continue conducting extensive research in her field.
Giving back to her community, Dr. Metzinger has been volunteering her time by conducting eye screenings free of charge at Saint George's Episcopal School since 2004. She has also been an active volunteer member of the Junior League of New Orleans since 2004. Additionally, Dr. Metzinger has been affiliated with the Southern Eye Bank.
Dr. Metzinger acquired a Bachelor of Science in biomedical sciences and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Michigan in 1992 and 1995, respectively. She also completed a general surgery internship at the University of Maryland Medical System between 1995 and 1996, followed by a postdoctoral research fellowship, a residency in ophthalmology, and a fellowship in cornea and external diseases at Tulane University School of Medicine between 1996 and 2001. Dr. Metzinger received her board certification through the American Board of Ophthalmology in 2002.
Active with various professional organizations, Dr. Metzinger is a member of Women in Ophthalmology, The American Society of Cataract Refractive Surgery, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology and the New Orleans Academy of Ophthalmology.
In recognition of her accomplishments, Dr. Metzinger has been named to Top Doctors, Top Women Doctors, City Business Woman of the Year and Healthcare Hero, and has been recognized as the Surgical Teacher of the Year by Tulane University, and, among other accolades, received an Outstanding Performance and the Reorganization of Veteran Eyecare Services Award from her local American Legion.
