Drawing on over 25 years of expertise, Dr. Fernholz specializes in education, literacy, and administration. Since 2016, she has found much success as a professor, as well as an assistant dean and head of the School of Education at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. In this capacity, she is responsible for budgeting, hiring, evaluating, fundraising, building relationships and creating course schedules but most importantly, student success. Prior to this role, she was active as an adjunct faculty member and an associate professor at Viterbo University from 2008 until 2016. Dr. Fernholz initially began her career serving as a sixth-grade reading teacher at the West Salem Middle School from 1996 to 2008.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Fernholz pursued an education at Viterbo University, where she obtained a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, followed by a Master of Arts in literacy education in 1999. She continued her academic efforts at Cardinal Stritch University, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in language and literacy in 2014. As a commitment to her field, Dr. Fernholz has been certified as a 17-reading specialist and a 316-reading teacher via the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
To remain aware of developments affecting her field, Dr. Fernholz has maintained her professional affiliation with several pertinent organizations, including the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education, the Wisconsin State Reading Association, the Professional Schools of Development Association, the International Society of Scholarly Teaching and Learning, and the Literacy Research Association, among others. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, she is involved with Gundersen Global Partners, Project Alianza, and Wisconsin/Nicaragua Partners of the Americas, Inc.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Dr. Fernholz has received multiple awards, including the College of Professional Studies Ethel and Ward Family Faculty Heroes Award from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in 2022 and the Rose Award from Viterbo University. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud of her volunteer work in Nicaragua, where she traveled to numerously, with pre-service teachers and established libraries and learning centers. Reflecting on her career, she attributes much of her success to her teachers, who believed in her and made her feel safe as a foster-system child. Looking toward the future, Dr. Fernholz aspires to continue collaborating between Central America and the Midwest, aims to build pathways from high school to college and hopes to make college accessible for everyone, while creating equity and inclusivity in education regardless of gender, identity, language and culture.
