TORONTO, ON, June 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Catherine Tammaro has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Leveraging more than five decades of excellence as an accomplished freelance artist, Catherine Tammaro has earned distinction as the current Indigenous Arts Program Manager for the Toronto Arts Council. As well, she has consistently focused her efforts on offering her spiritually-focused art as a form of teaching; integrating a sense of spiritual responsibility and agency, especially assisting in empowering Indigenous women in creative work regarding their own Traditional Lifeways. She has accepted many commissions for both public and private works and has exhibited extensively over the years. Her own art practice highlights spiritual resonance within the Wendat Confederacy as well as 'restorying' settler narratives from a decolonized perspective, in music, visual art and written works. Additionally, she has been the owner of her own business, Catherine Tammaro ART/Design founded officially in 2003 but she has freelanced since 1970 as a multidisciplinary artist, musician, designer, author and teacher. Catherine also engages in community-oriented promotion of other people's artwork and has for many decades.
Early in her career, Ms. Tammaro Art Directed the premiere benefit for Casey House, Toronto's First AIDS Hospice in Toronto and went on to coordinate or originate several projects and productions, including theatre, working with marginalised youth and helping to establish an Art Therapy Programme for Terry Fox House (Operation Springboard) in the early 90s. Catherine was the author of Sine Qua Non a column running in a Toronto paper for several years featuring deep (non - clinical) conversations with artists regarding their inspirations vis a vis her training in Art and Psychiatry under Professor John McGregor while at OCA and other specialized yet diverse methodologies in school.
Catherine was one of eight Wendat Confederacy Women selected by Confederacy Chiefs to participate in the Daughters of Aataentsic, a ten year long project under the auspices of Professor Kathryn Mageee Labelle (USask), as an advisor and to which she contributed a reflection piece "Dreaming Creation" - "Daughters of Aataentsic: Life Stories from Seven Generations," McGill Queen's University Press; 2021. Catherine also contributed a chapter to "Sacred Civics: Building Seven Generation Cities," which was published by Routledge in 2022, along with much other writing.
Likewise dedicated to civil advocacy, Ms. Tammaro served as Communications Officer for the Wyandot of Anderdon Nation and has lent her expertise as an invited speaker numerous times, including, NorthEastern State University in Tahlequah, Oklahoma 2017, OCADU in Toronto, and Colgate University in upstate New York in 2023 and UBC. Catherine is in demand as a public speaker, teacher, artist and Elder.
Ms. Tammaro has served as a project supervisor for Toronto's Gardiner Museum of Ceramic's Sin Fronteras, A Flight Path Without Borders, in 2019. Later that year, she worked on the Collective Poetry in Print Residence for the InPrint Collective until becoming the Elder in residence for Evergreen Brick Works in 2021. She has been on many juries run by the City of Toronto for awards of commissions to many artists and is currently an advisor in several city initiatives regarding Indigenous work in Toronto.
Among her other professional accomplishments, Ms. Tammaro is proud to have received support from Halton Conservation, SSHRC and the Toronto Arts Council. She also received a Grant for Material and Supplies Assistance for Indigenous Artists in 2013 and a travel grant in 2018, both from the Ontario Arts Council. Aspects of her work were regarding the environment in various documentaries and recently at the HKV Museum in Berlin. She was the first seated FaithKeeper for her people in over a century and is committed to service of her community. In her youth, she was one of six selected out of over 900 applicants to an unprecedented apprenticeship program for retail merchandise display, which gave her enough impetus to start her freelance career. She has also been awarded contracts for public artworks in the City of Toronto. She was a collaborator in The Burn at Nathan Phillips Square (Toronto City Hall) in Spring of 2023 a major art installation which took well over a year to plan and execute. She teaches, advises and creates with enthusiasm and generosity.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Tammaro earned an Associate Degree in General Studies from OCAD University in Toronto, Canada in 1982. Studies at The Cleveland Institute of Art and well-qualified in her field, she completed a digital imaging and publishing program with Toronto Image Works in 2002 and has bolstered her knowledge of Indigenous Lifeways by taking online courses and travelling the Confederacy while working with the Indigenous Community in the City. Catherine Tammaro is curious and intrigued, inspired and ambitious. Her design sensibility is rooted in her cultural lifeways and her greatest expression is embodied in her awareness of the Land, Water and Sky; and our relationship to the Natural World.
Within the coming years, Ms. Tammaro intends to develop her relationship with partners and institutions in such a way as to cultivate works of art that speak to her creative expression of Wyandot lifeways and aspires to continue to paint, make music, write and exhibit in museums across Canada and internationally.
