Drawing on over 15 years of expertise in the legal field, Ms. Hernandez specializes in criminal defense and civil litigation cases. Since 2021, she has found much success as an assistant federal public defender for the United States Federal Public Defender Organizations. In this capacity, she advocates for indigent individuals accused of federal misdemeanors and felonies. Prior to this role, Ms. Hernandez was active as the president of her private firm, Hernandez, Lopez and Associates LLC from 2016 until 2021, while concurrently serving as a project coordinator and professor at University of Puerto Rico Law School from 2020 to 2021.
Ms. Hernandez initially began her career working as a partner at Santana Rabell and Hernandez Law Officer PSC between 2006 and 2012. During this time, she also served as a professor at the American University of Puerto Rico in 2010. She later excelled as a legislative assistant for the Senate of Puerto Rico in 2014. Following this post, Ms. Hernandez garnered expertise as an associate at Marin Law from 2015 to 2016.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Ms. Hernandez pursued an education at the University of Puerto Rico, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government in 2000, followed by a Juris Doctor from the Inter American University of Puerto Rico School of Law in 2005. She continued her academic efforts at Loyola Marymount University Law School in Los Angeles, earning a Master of Laws in criminal justice in 2021. As a commitment to her field, Ms. Hernandez has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the United States District Court for the District of Puerto Rico, the United States District Court for the Western District of Texas and the Bar Association of Puerto Rico, among others.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Ms. Hernandez has received multiple awards, including the Top Pro Bono Attorney award from the Legal Services Corporation in 2009. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud to have been involved in the DNA-Post Conviction Project at the University of Puerto Rico School of Law and to have contributed to the white-collar Supreme Court of Puerto Rico case in 2004, which recognized the fundamental right of the Puerto Rican people to defend themselves in a criminal case. Reflecting on her career, she attributes much of her success to the guidance and support of her family.
