A graduate of the University of Kerala, he holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry and a Master of Science in biochemistry. He was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry in 1990, and continued his education in the United States after relocating from India. Between 1997 and 2001, Dr. Rafi was a postdoctoral fellow in cell biology, medical oncology, and cancer biology at the Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he contributed to research that would earn him a 2002 American Chemical Society Newsmaker Award.
Dr. Rafi is best-known as an innovator and entrepreneur in the nutrition and supplements industry. He is the founder and chief executive officer of the Bioactives American Corporation and Princeton Vitamins LLC, where he markets unique patented herbal extracts and probiotic compounds for use in treating joint pain, high blood pressure, and other chronic conditions. Throughout his career, he has shared his expertise and research excellence with students and peer academics as a teacher, including lecturer positions at Mahatma Gandhi Unviersity, St. Thomas College, and the University of Calicut. He was a research teaching specialist III and co-investigator in oncology clinical trials at Rutgers University in the late 1990s, and served as an assistant professor of nutrigenomics and nutraceuticals at the university from 2001 until 2009. Since 2020, Dr. Rafi has brought his unique industry knowledge and educational background to students as the founder of an e-learning platform offering MCAT, SAT, and college coursework preparation.
As a leader in his field, Dr. Rafi has contributed to more than 35 peer-reviewed articles and holds several patents. He is a four-time Rutgers University Faculty Academic Service Increment Program Award winner and the recipient of the 2000 Gallo Award for Outstanding Cancer Research, and has served as a moderator for conferences including the Institute of Food Technologies Annual Meeting, the 223rd American Chemical Society National Meeting, and as chair of the first Rutgers University National Conference in Nutrigenomics.
