CHICAGO, IL, June 29, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Uroš Laban, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Psychedelics are being studied for their potential in treating various mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), addiction, and end-of-life distress. Clinical trials have shown promising results, leading to increased acceptance and integration of psychedelics into mainstream medicine.
Dr. Laban has been a medicinal chemist at CaaMTech and an honorific visiting scholar at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth since 2022 where he synthesized and fully characterized the first monoalkyl analog of psilocin (active ingredient of magic mushrooms). As a seasoned researcher, he creates and optimizes psychedelic compounds and their formulations through rigorous science and innovation. Drug discovery is preceded by molecular modelling, followed by the total synthesis of novel clinical candidates with enhanced pharmaceutical profile for treatment of neurodegenerative diseases and depression. He is currently investigating their mechanisms of action, optimizing treatment protocols, exploring novel compounds, and assessing their long-term safety and efficacy. He is also modifying the psilocin pharmacophore to discover anti-cancer compounds to effectively treat breast and pancreatic cancer. This ongoing research will contribute to a deeper understanding of psychedelics in their future use.
Dr. Laban helped start Bright Minds, a company noted for being the first to develop at least two successful psychedelic drugs for treating mental illness. These compounds are short-acting and possess a safe pharmacological profile devoid of potential cardiotoxicity. They are very effective in treating major depressive disorder and addiction, by their neurogenic action on the human brain. Among other accomplishments, Dr. Laban has secured four patents in his field. He participated in podcast, the "Psychedelic Research Podcast," in Brazil, and has been a speaker on a conference "The Future of Psychedelics." He also hosts a channel on YouTube using virtual reality videos to elucidate molecular mechanisms of action of these compounds.
Dr. Laban has found success as the founder of Ewelabs, an international pharmaceutical consultancy practice that focuses on developing strategies for pharmaceutical industry development, and as the chief chemist at Associação Cannab in Brazil since 2016, a non-profit that provides cannabis-based medications for patients with debilitating diseases. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Laban was a postdoctoral research associate at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, and a principal scientist at Laborvida.
As a project manager and scientific advisor at Senai Cimetec, he developed novel anti-tuberculosis agents, anticancer remedies from plants, nanosilver materials for pest control (Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, Zica, Leishmaniosis) and novel platinum anticancer complexes. Dr. Laban has authored two astrology books, "Heavenly Wisdom: Study of Light" and "Pandemic Astrology" in 2020, and is presently working on his third, which will be focused on the medical astrology of cancer. He has also contributed several scholarly articles. He practices medical astrology incorporating his vast knowledge of medicinal plants, Ayurveda, homeopathy and natural healing. Aside from his work-related endeavors, Dr. Laban is recognized as a chess master who has competed in numerous tournaments in ex-Yugoslavia, Argentina and Brazil. In his youth, he was fortunate to study with Kasparov's trainer, Josif Dorfman. Additionally, he is a trained musician (son of prima-ballerina) and a master in Brazilian and Cuban percussion who played in the most prestigious samba schools in Rio de Janeiro.
Dr. Laban was born in Lusaka (Zambia) and grew up in Yugoslavia. To avoid the war in the nineties, he immigrated to Argentina for a year, where his father had worked as a civil engineer, before making his way to the U.S. Continuing his education, Dr. Laban received a Bachelor of Science in biochemistry from the University of Illinois in Chicago in 1994, followed by a Master of Science in organic chemistry from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1997. He achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in medicinal chemistry from Purdue University in 2004 and later, two postdoctoral degrees at Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. After moving to Brazil and spending the next 15 years living and working there, he returned to the U.S. Dr. Laban speaks English, Spanish, Portuguese, and Serbo-Croatian. He enjoys playing music, swimming, cultivating medicinal plants, playing chess, doing astrology, and studying nature.
