Ms. Skop is a former teacher who now serves as the senior advisor to the deputy chancellor for the New York City Department of Education (NYDOE). Responsible for advising in literacy and labor relations and supporting superintendents, she leverages more than two decades of classroom expertise to her success in her latest role. Following in the department's mission, Ms. Skop strives to ensure that every New York City student graduates from high school equipped to enjoy a career path that enables them to thrive economically.
Before being named to her position, Ms. Skop was a community superintendent for the NYDOE, District 15, in Brooklyn from 2009 to 2022. Her extensive job scope involved supervising 37 schools and more than 25,000 students in grades Pre-K through eight. Ms. Skop also served as a lead senior achievement facilitator for the NYDOE in Ozone Park between 2007 and 2009. Moreover, she garnered over two decades of success in higher education as a faculty member at Toro University, a private Jewish university based in New York City.
Having a strong desire to teach since she was a child, Ms. Skop recalls being just three, lining up her dolls, and playing school with her blackboard. As she grew older, her affinity for the profession grew stronger. Looking toward the future, Ms. Skop envisions serving in a consulting capacity, focusing mainly on literacy, once she retires. She also aims to publish her first book.
In addition to her paid position, Ms. Skop also enjoys giving back her time to the community in other ways. She has served as a scout leader for the Girl Scouts of America. She also taught theater at a local summer camp for several years and was a camp director at a nearby hotel in the Catskills, New York.
Ms. Skop earned a Bachelor of Arts in English with a minor in education from Brooklyn College. She also received an advanced certification in administration from the institution. Additionally, Ms. Skop received a Master of Education in special education from Adelphi University.
Honored for her excellence in education, Ms. Skop received a Reliance Award for Excellence in Education and a Shirley Chisholm Award. She was also named as the 1994 New York State Teacher of the Year. Ms. Skop credits her success in teaching to her innate admiration for others and her desire to make a difference.
