SEAL BEACH, CA, July 10, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Charlene Fried has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Ms. Fried is a dedicated educator who excels in her work with diverse student populations. Her current appointments are varied and include a role as a Lecturer B in the Department of Curriculum and Instruction of the Charter College of Education at California State University Los Angeles. She also actively supervises and mentors student teachers. Ms. Fried is also a designated adjunct professor of ELD/Spanish Methodology and Assessment/Literacy at Loyola Marymount University. She is also a high school English and English Language Development instructor who thrives on partnering with students at Sierra Vista High School, where she represents the institution as its first bilingual teacher. The community that thrives in Baldwin Park has shaped her own life in so many positive ways. She attributes all her success as a teacher to the wonderful students she has worked with all these years. Presently, one of her students, Diana Aguilar, is the Trustee for all the California State Universities. Another student, Alejandra Castillo, is receiving her doctorate. Another student, Carlos Ochoa, became a professional soccer player, as well as an exemplary students. She is proud of all her students, and is thankful for everything they have accomplished after bravely coming to the United States without speaking a word of English, but with a legacy of stories to share. She maintains especially close contact with all her students who have become the next generation of teachers for our children.
Extensive academic credentials as well as broad expertise in social–emotional learning shape Ms. Fried's pedagogical profile. In 1968/69, she completed a Bachelor of Arts in English and public speaking from San Francisco State University, and in 1984, she secured a Master of Science in Bilingual Cross-Cultural Education from Pepperdine University. She is also gratified to hold the designation of a Bilingual Cross-Cultural Education Specialist Credential from Pepperdine. Ms. Fried earned a certificate in Spanish from the University of Valencia and the University of Salamanca in Spain.
Through international travel to Mexico and Spain, Ms. Fried has gained valuable insights into the structure and priorities of international school systems, and she relied on those applied experiences to refine her Spanish speaking and writing acumen. Ms. Fried is also gratified to have partnered with her son to do volunteer work in Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico to advance the Spanish and English literacy of Mayan children toward greatly expanding their academic and professional opportunities. She is working on acquiring conversational Maya.
Ms. Fried's passions are to teach and travel. She spent one school year driving from Los Angeles, California to Puerto Limon, Costa Rica, and then shipping the van from Costa Rica to Puerto Cabello, Venezuela. She and her husband drove all the way to Brazil, camping all the way and sharing experiences with the people in each country they visited. After she started receiving students from Asian countries, she spent two summers traveling all over Asia, with a strong desire to learn more about her new students' languages, cultures, and traditions. She has also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Morocco, Micronesia, Melanisia, and Israel. She strongly believes that traveling is the way to share and learn from others. She urges her students to take risks and travel, too, as they pursue their own dreams. She encourages them to create rather than consume, and to invent rather than copy or mimic, and to always remain thankful and humble for all the assets they have brought to this country and everything they have accomplished and shared with others.
Ms. Fried has enjoyed ample recognition for her accomplishments and steadfast service. She accepted the Teacher of the Year award from the National Association for Bilingual Education in both 1998 and 2020 and from the California Association for Bilingual Education in 1997; more recently, California Senator Susan Rubio named Ms. Fried the Woman Educator of the Year in 2023, and she also received an Upper District Water Education Grant. She was awarded the Corazon Award from the California Association for Bilingual Education in 2016 and was recognized by the National Association for Bilingual Education for her years of service to English learners in 2020. Additionally, Ms. Fried was humbled when the Baldwin Park Unified School District renamed the Sierra Vista High School Library the Charlene Fried Library in 2022 in acknowledgment of her productivity as an educator and her efforts as a champion of the success of English learners.
She has been published in magazines and newspapers (Si Magazine, CABE Multilingual Educator, NABE Weekly eNews, LA Opinion, LMU CEEL Publication, San Francisco Examiner, San Gabriel Valley News) and has appeared on television as an advocate for English learners (Univision). She has been interviewed for Podcasts as an advocate for English learners (California News Report, Ed Source).
Ms. Fried is proud to have maintained an affiliation with Sierra Vista High School, where she has been on staff her entire teaching career. She credits her success there to the students' academic excellence and resilience, particularly in their efforts to excel even during restrictive pandemic protocols. Ms. Fried is gratified to watch her students triumph, in particular those who are awarded valuable scholarships to pursue a career in education, and to have been invited to share details about her unique classroom methods with various news outlets, including EdSource Magazine in 2021 and 2022.
Ms. Fried plans to maintain a presence in academia even after retirement and is exploring volunteer and advocacy opportunities with the California Association for Bilingual Education and continuing her volunteer work in Akumal, Quintana Roo, Mexico. She also aims to continue to travel widely, especially to African and Arabic countries she has yet to visit, and to pursue writing, which remains one of Ms. Fried's distinct passions and which complements her efficacy as a writing coach. She strongly believes that it is our stories that shape our cultures, languages, traditions, and who we are, and that by sharing our stories with others, all over the world, we will find the way to unite all the people.
