GENEVA, IL, July 13, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Marquis Who's Who, the world's premier publisher of biographical profiles, is proud to present Donald B. Peck with the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award. An accomplished listee, Mr. Peck celebrates many years' experience in his professional network, and has been noted for achievements, leadership qualities, and the credentials and successes he has accrued in his field. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Mr. Peck's philosophy is that science is the active pursuit of new knowledge about our physical world. It is about asking questions, getting our hands dirty, and seeking answers. Science is something we do and it can be taught that way. To this end he promoted research programs in high school and "research' activities in elementary schools.
Mr. Peck led a long and distinguished career in education that spanned more than 40 years while specializing in chemistry, geology, and mineralogy. Prior to retiring, he served as the director of the Center for Elementary Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey between 1987 and 1996. During his tenure on campus, Mr. Peck specialized in geology and focused heavily on curriculum and instruction for elementary school children. He and his team were invited to teach their approach to elementary school science education in Puerto Rico by Merck Pharmaceutical Company and in South Korea by the Korean National University for Education.
During an earlier stage of his career, Mr. Peck taught and held administrative roles in the public school system. He initially taught chemistry and physics at Litchfield High School in Litchfield, Connecticut, during the early 1950s and subsequently spent more than 20 years in New Jersey as the director of science curriculum and instruction at Scotch Plains-Fanwood Public Schools and as the supervisor of science curriculum and instruction at Woodbridge Township School District. Mr. Peck also had the opportunity to teach chemistry and geology on the Torrington and Waterbury campuses at the University of Connecticut during the 1960s.
Mr. Peck's research was supported through fellowships from the National Science Foundation and General Electric Co. His visits to their laboratories were career changing.
Apart from his extensive career in education and research, Mr. Peck has become a well-written writer, co-authoring numerous science textbooks for Holt Rinehart and Winston, Silver Burdett Ginn, and Houghton Mifflin publishers during the course of 20 years. In 2007, he also authored "Mineral Identification: A Practical Guide for the Amateur Mineralogist" via the Mineralogical Record. The book's second edition was released in 2016.
In retirement, Mr. Peck enjoys involvement with various local nonprofit and civic initiatives. Among his efforts, he has volunteered his time to his local Habitat for Humanity.
A graduate of Bates College, Mr. Peck earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry in 1953. He subsequently attended Union College, earning a Master of Science in Science Teaching in 1960. Additionally, Mr. Peck studied in the Doctor of Philosophy program at the University of Maryland in 1971, sponsored by the National Science Foundation.
Mr. Peck is recognized as a life member of the National Science Teachers Association.
