Preparing for retirement after a 30-year career in the military, Dr. Ross is an experienced researcher renowned for his computer and network security industry expertise. Having spent approximately half his career as an artillery officer, he also accumulated a decade of success as a cyberspace officer at the U.S. Army Cyber Command in Fort Gordon, Georgia. In 2023, Dr. Ross accepted the position of hub director at the Cyber Fusion Innovation Center at DEFENSEWERX in Augusta, Georgia, responsible for serving as an integrator between industry, academia, government, and the U.S. Army Cyber Command developing innovative technology in the cyberspace domain.
Among other noteworthy roles throughout his career, Dr. Ross has served as a senior cyber research scientist, assistant professor, and information warfare team lead at the Army Cyber Institute at the U.S. Military Academy in West Point, New York. During his tenure, he researched future forecasting and what technology will look like in 10 years. Working alongside Brian David Johnson, the two used science fiction writing to project threat futures.
Dr. Ross has been published extensively. Some of his recently published articles include 'Your Guide to Cyberspace: Command Leads Army's Mission in 5th Warfighting Domain' in Army Magazine in 2022 and 'A Military of Influencers: The U.S. Army Social Media, and Winning Narrative Conflicts' in Cyber Defense Review in 2022. Dr. Ross also serves as a special area editor for Cyber Defense Review, a cyberspace operations periodical for the U.S. Department of Defense.
Becoming fascinated by military history while coming of age, Dr. Ross chose to enlist in the U.S. Navy at age 17. After graduating high school, he left for basic training before completing five years in the service. Dr. Ross subsequently pursued the U.S. Army, becoming a senior in the Reserve Officers Training Corps, and continually progressed. After his first tour in Iraq, he was accepted to apply as a computer science instructor in the U.S. Military Academy's electrical engineering and computer science department.
Dr. Ross obtained a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Rowan University in 1998 and, at the expense of the U.S. Army, earned a Master of Science in computer science from Monmouth University in 2007. He also received a Doctor of Philosophy in computer and information sciences, command, and control from the Naval Postgraduate School in 2019.
To remain relevant in the industry, Dr. Ross is a member of the Information Professionals Association, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the ACM. He is also a member of the Association of the United States Army. Furthermore, Dr. Ross was elected to the Order of Saint Barbara, a military honor society, and the Order of Thor, which recognizes excellence in the American military cyber community. Honoring his service in the military, he was decorated with two Bronze Stars and a Legion of Merit Award.
