As a Principal Member of the Technical Staff, Dr. Sarma leads numerous projects at Sandia National Laboratories in the area of nanophotonics, artificial intelligence, optical computing, and image processing. Previously, Dr. Sarma worked for Sandia National Laboratories as a Senior Member of the Technical Staff and as a Postdoctoral Appointee for the Lab's Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies facility.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Sarma gained valuable expertise through research and internship experiences with the University of Texas Department of Physics, Nokia Bell Labs, Yale University, Fermilab, High Altitude Observatory, and the Indian Institute of Technology. Driven to remain abreast of ongoing industry changes, Dr. Sarma aligns himself with Optica, which was previously known as the Optical Society of America. He also serves as a peer-reviewer of numerous international journals and as a reviewer of proposals of different international funding agencies.
An expert in his field, Dr. Sarma holds a Bachelor of Science in physics with minors in nanoscience and technology from the University of Texas. Subsequently, he expanded upon his professional knowledge by earning a Master of Science, Master of Philosophy, and PhD in applied physics from Yale University. Over the years, he has utilized his expertise to contribute to more than 125 journal papers, conference papers, and invited talks as an author and co-author. In recognition of his achievements, Dr. Sarma has been honored on several occasions, earning the Frito Lay Scholarship, the Van Ness Scholarship, and an Academic Distinction Scholarship through the University of Texas.
While his career has been filled with standout moments, Dr. Sarma takes the most pride in his research into optical gyroscopes at Yale University and in having his work published and discoverable to others in the industry. The cornerstone of his success lay with his amazing mentors who have taken him under their wings. Looking ahead, Dr. Sarma intends to lead new projects at Sandia National Laboratories in the areas of silicon photonics, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and optical computing which are aligned with Sandia's mission goals as well as with the recent United States Chips and Science Act, which would encourage more scientific activities in the areas of microelectronics, artificial intelligence, and more.
