Dr. Haney presently functions as the program director and an associate professor of health information management (HIM) at William Carey University.

Focusing his career in public health and health informatics for more than 15 years, Dr. Haney presently functions as the program director and an associate professor of health information management (HIM) at William Carey University in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. Teaching on campus since 2015, he has been instrumental in placing numerous students in health information management roles after graduation and has also produced numerous registered health information administrators (RHIAs) in the southern region. Dr. Haney has taught such courses as Foundations of Health Information Management, Diagnostic and Procedural Coding, and Statistics for Healthcare Professionals. Additionally, he began serving as the chair of the William Carey School of Nursing Health Administration and Education PhD Program in 2020 and continues to sit on various school committees and boards.
A recognized expert in data analysis and public health, as well as health information management, Dr. Haney has found success as a principal consultant for Haney Health Consultants LLC in New Orleans, which he established in 2010. Previously, he garnered expertise as the director of health information management at Dauterive Hospital between 2015 and 2017 and as the health information technology director at Jefferson Community Health Care Centers Inc. from 2013 to 2015. Dr. Haney also served as a behavioral risk factor surveillance system coordinator, clinical epidemiologist and health inspector for the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals, Office of Public Health, between 2007 and 2013. Furthermore, Dr. Haney held several research positions between 2004 and 2013.
As a scholar, Dr. Haney has been published in the Infectious Disease Epidemiology and several other leading scholarly journals about diseases, morbidity, and other topics. His most recent contribution was titled 'Katrina to Corona: Surges Urge the United States to Learn' in a May 2021 edition of the American Journal of Public Health. Dr. Haney has also frequently presented before various practitioner and academic audiences in his area of expertise since 2016.
As a part of his community service commitments, Dr. Haney has functioned as a site surveyor for the Commission on the Accreditation for Health Informatics and Information Management (CAHIIM) since 2020, a Tennessee State University HIM advisory committee member since 2020, a Herzing University HIM advisory committee member since 2019, and a Southern University HIIMS advisory committee member since 2014. In his role as site surveyor for CAHIIM, he has assisted in accrediting over 17 HIM programs across the country at the bachelors, masters, and associate levels.
Dr. Haney is highly educated. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology at Morehouse College, followed by a Master of Public Health, with a concentration in environmental and occupational health sciences, at the University of Illinois at Chicago and a Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy with a concentration in health policy analysis at Southern University and A&M College. Well qualified in his field, Dr. Haney is recognized as an RHIA through the American Health Information Management Association and as a registered sanitarian through the Louisiana State Board of Examiners for Sanitarians.
To remain aware of developments affecting his field, Dr. Haney serves on the board of Health Informatics, as the section chair for the Louisiana Public Health Association, and as the chair of the Pine Belt chapter of the Mississippi Public Health Association. He is also the president of the Mississippi Health Information Management Association, where he was notably recognized as the Educator of the Year by his students. Other memberships to his credit include the American Health Information Management Association, the Mississippi Health Information Management Association, the American Public Health Association, NAACP-MS, and Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. MuXi Chapter.
Grateful for his many achievements in the industry, Dr. Haney credits the influence of his faith and family, as well as his parents for instilling a strong work ethic in him while growing up. Additionally, he is appreciative of several tremendous mentors that he has been blessed to learn under while making his way through the industry.
