NEW YORK, NY, July 20, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Luis Alberto Mares, MD, LMSW, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. Dr. Mares is the director of Community Mobilization Programs for the Latino Commission on AIDS, a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1990 in New York City dedicated to fighting the spread of human immunodeficiency viruses/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS) and health disparities in the Latino community.
Devoted to this particular population for more than 25 years, Dr. Mares came to New York from Peru in 1997 and joined the McBurney Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) and the Jamaica YMCA in 1998, he served as a health care coordinator for nearly a decade for a transitional housing for homeless individuals living with AIDS. Dr. Mares was subsequently named as the director of transitional housing and residential services at the YMCA of Greater New York, a role he held for five years. In 2017 he joined the Latino Commission on AIDS and began his role in organizing two national awareness campaigns, the National Latino AIDS Awareness Day, and the National Hispanic Hepatitis Awareness Day.
Dr. Mares has been active on numerous committees, including the End the Epidemic (ETE) Non-English Speaking, New Immigrants, and Migrant Farmworkers advisory subcommittee for the New York State Department of Health AIDS Institute, the AIDS United Community Mobilization Subcommittee, and, among others, the NYC Hepatitis Awareness Event Planning Committee, and the NYC World AIDS Day Planning Committee. More recently, Dr. Mares has been involved with responses to the COVID-19 pandemic in collaboration with the COVID-19 Prevention Network, providing vaccine information to the Latino community throughout the U.S. and becoming involved in various advocacy initiatives.
During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Mares was a resident physician at Clinica San Felipe S.A. in his native Peru from 1993 to 1997. During those same years, he also served as an advisor to the National Pharmacological Commission, Ministry of Health of Peru.
Contributing to his expertise, Dr. Mares authored a magazine article in 2022 titled 'The Power of Education", published in the HIV Specialist magazine.
Adamant about giving back, Dr. Mares has volunteered for the New York City Department of Homeless Services since 2018. He has also served as a counselor at the NYC LGBT Center during 2016-17. Dr. Mares formerly contributed to the Coalition for the Homeless Inc., delivering meals to people experiencing homelessness from 2018 to 2019, and as a volunteer firefighter for the Cuerpo General de Bomberos Voluntarios del Perú (General Corps of Volunteer Firefighters of Peru) between 1993 and 1997.
Highly educated, Dr. Mares earned a Doctor of Medicine at the Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia in 1993 and a Master of Social Work at New York University (NYU) in 2017. He also garnered numerous credentials, including certification through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and as a licensed master social worker. Dr. Mares speaks English and Spanish. Looking toward the future, Dr. Mares plans to pursue a Master of Public Health at NYU.
In recognition of his work, Dr. Mares was honored among the Best 100 Latino HIV Advocates in the country by POZ Magazine in 2022 and among The Responsible 100 New Yorkers by the City and State of New York in 2022. His alma mater, NYU, also highlighted his work on World AIDS Day 2022.
Dr. Mares is member of the Scientific Advisory Committee for the NC3 Study "Tale of two pandemics: Understanding racial and ethnic disparities from the collision of HIV and COVID-19 in the U.S." in Seattle, and has been recently invited to be a member of the Community Advisory Board for the LGBTQ Cancer Survey to be launched in the PRIDE study, a study that will look into cancer risks among the LGBTQ Community and the effect of the intersectionality in these risks.
