Dr. Porat is the associate director of the protein science department at Prothena Corporation Plc, a late-stage clinical biotechnology company based in Dublin. The department, which is a part of the research and development aspect of the company, serves to find a medicine to treat neurodegenerative diseases caused by protein misfolding, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, and one that will also prevent the onset of Alzheimer's disease.
Having led a prosperous career in the industry for two decades, Dr. Porat began working for Charm Sciences Inc. in 2004 as a biochemistry scientist. He subsequently joined Prosci in 2006 as a research scientist and recombinant proteins production leader, Agmen in 2010 as a senior scientist of protein sciences, Tunitas Therapeutics in 2014 as a DSP leader of protein sciences, and Merck in 2016 as a principal scientist of protein purification. In 2017, Dr. Porat was acquired by Applied Molecular Transport as a principal scientist in protein refolding and purification process development before being promoted to senior principal scientist in 2021.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Porat secured two U.S. patents, one for methods and compositions for protein refolding and purification and another for the compositions, formulation, and interleukin production and purification. Looking toward the future, he aims to contribute to finding a cure for those suffering from pain due to Alzheimer's disease.
Giving back to various charities, Dr. Porat has volunteered his time to a local humane society. He also endowed Harvard University library on the Social Issues in Biology Impact Fund in honor of Dr. Jon Beckwith.
Dr. Porat is a native of Israel who graduated from Tel Aviv University with a Bachelor of Science in biology in 1994 and the Weizmann Institute of Science with a Master of Science in 1996 and a Doctor of Philosophy in biological chemistry in 2002. While pursuing his undergraduate degree, he was a biochemistry and molecular biology laboratory technician on the Weizmann campus from 1991 to 1993. He also completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School from 2001 to 2004. Additionally, Dr. Porat received certification from Pharmaceutical Training International in 2019. In support of his work, he is an active professional member of the American Chemical Society.
Despite Dr. Porat's many struggles to leave his socialistic community and establish himself in a new country, he became a U.S. citizen in 2017. Before leaving home, he was a farmer in his native Israel. Dr. Porat attributes his professional success to his ability to persevere.
