Raised by a proud single mother, Adewale Adeyinka Odukoya, MD, was initially exposed to the field of medicine by volunteering for a regional church in his native country of Nigeria through which he helped with general medical check-ups and educating others in preventive medicine. He subsequently developed a passion for providing medical care to underserved population and returned to the United States at the age of 20. Although trained as an emergency medicine physician, after meeting patients in need of an end-of-life care specialist, Dr. Odukoya decided to focus on hospice and palliative medicine as he believed strongly in the importance of providing a comfortable living for the terminally ill for as long as possible.
Supporting himself financially while pursuing a higher education, Dr. Odukoya cites his ability to overcome the challenges posed to immigrants and minorities as the highlight of his career, as it motivated him to work harder in various fields. His dedication to improving himself extends to going beyond his physical limitations, as a back surgery in 2015 forced him to complete three medical school exams while lying on the floor. Dr. Odukoya has been influenced by his family, including his wife, daughters, son and his relatives.
Dr. Odukoya notably graduated from the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Medicine with a Doctor of Medicine in 2016. He later refined his skills at the University of Tennessee through a residency in family medicine in 2019 and a fellowship in emergency medicine in 2020. Obtaining his license to practice medicine in the following years. Dr. Odukoya later completed a fellowship in hospice and palliative medicine with Washington University-Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St. Louis, Missouri in 2021. He is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Beginning his career with the University of Tennessee Family Medicine Center, Dr Odukoya was recognized as a Distinguished Resident in 2019 after he delivered a baby emergently in the clinic for the first time ever! He was appointed to the ethics committee at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital and co-authored the Pain Management chapter for "The Washington Manual of Outpatient Internal Medicine in 2021. Dr Odukoya was recently appointed as a clinical assistant professor with the Sam Houston State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. "Beyond his primary professional responsibilities, he has been affiliated with his local chapter of Lion's Club and has contributed to the Local Fire Department as a volunteer for the last six years.
Passionate about hospice care and emergency medicine, Dr. Odukoya has excelled as a physician with Woodland Heights Memorial Hospital in Lufkin since 2021 as a testament to his medical prowess. Attributing his success to his faith, upbringing, and the tireless support of his family, he is currently establishing a home hospice care company, Frontida Hospice Care LLC, in Dallas, Texas. Moreover, Dr. Odukoya hopes to open a clinic or hospital in Nigeria while offering scholarships for students at his undergraduate alma mater in the coming years.
