With more than two decades of excellence in sleep medicine and internal medicine, Dr. Hummel has earned distinction as a sleep physician with Three Rivers Medical Associates. Since 2023, she has focused her efforts on treating patients with sleep disorders, including sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Additionally, she is a valued member of the South Carolina Sleep Society, the American Society for Laser Medicine and Surgery and the American Academy of Sleep Medicine.
Outside of her primary career efforts, Dr. Hummel has served as a physician with Rejuvenations Medical Spa since 2006, serving as the medical director from 2006 until 2009. She also joined Bogan Sleep Consultants as a physician in 2017 and serves as an executive manager and has served as an associate director of Scout and Cellar.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Hummel began her career at the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital in 2003, becoming a staff physician, supervising physician for the primary care team and a spinal cord injury physician in 2003. Following this time, she served as a physician with the South Carolina Internal Medicine Associates in 2006 and returned to the William Jennings Bryan Dorn Veterans Hospital in 2007. She subsequently was the medical director and supervising physician for the Sleep Center of Columbia in 2006. She continued her career as the medical director of Respiratory Diagnostics from 2009 until 2018. Among her professional accomplishments, she was elected twice to Leading Physicians of the World in 2015 and 2016 and was inducted to the list of Top Docs.
Over the course of her career, Dr. Hummel has contributed a wealth of research to her field, including authoring a chapter in the "2011 Circadian Rhythm Disorders Compendium" and contributing "Effect of Armodafinil Treatment in Healthy Subjects Associated with Jet Lag Disorder" as a sub-investigator for a three-day randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled parallel group study in 2008. She has also given presentations of her work at the Dorn Veterans Affairs Hospital, Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital and at the Annual South Carolina SleepMed Sleep Seminar.
To prepare for her medical career, Dr. Hummel earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the College of Charleston in 1996 and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of South Carolina School of Medicine in 2000. Following this achievement, she underwent an internship in 2000 and a residency in 2001 in internal medicine, both at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital.
Looking to the future, Dr. Hummel intends to continue growing her practice, including taking continuing education courses and recruiting another sleep specialist who will keep her legacy alive when she retires. She is passionate about motivating her patients by helping them understand the importance of sleep and how it is affected by healthy metabolism, glucose and insulin control, weight management and other key aspects of their health. She also plans to engage in more medical mission trips in the future, having gone to Nicaragua for three years previously.
