COLLIERVILLE, TN, July 24, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Duane D. Miller, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
Now retired, Dr. Miller is recognized as a professor emeritus who was a faculty member at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the college of pharmacy, department of pharmaceutical sciences, from 1992 to 2015. He also served as the chair of the department of pharmaceutical sciences between 2000 and 2015.
As an expert in medicinal chemistry, Dr. Miller has conducted extensive studies and has designed and synthesized several new drugs. He particularly enjoyed participating in collaborative research projects with expert faculty members in their respective areas. Among his most recognizable work, Dr. Miller along with Dr. James Dalton were responsible for creating Enobosarm, one of the first Selective Androgen Receptor Modulators (SARMs). This drug has the same activity as testosterone, except testosterone is a steroid, and SARMs are non-steroidal compounds.
Dr. Miller remains active in his laboratory on campus with the assistance of several National Institutes of Health grants in collaboration with Drs. Wei Li, Ramesh Narayanan and Lawrence Pfeffer. He is collaborating with these individuals on various projects on testing drugs for the treatment of resistant prorate cancer, breast cancer and the very deadly brain cancer, glioblastoma, and is working with two biotechnology firms, Veru in Florida and Oncternal Therapeutics in San Diego. Much of Dr. Miller's focus has been on the design and synthesis of drugs for cancer, emphysema, and obesity. He also maintains an interest in drugs used to inhibit tubulin. treat and diagnose Kennedy's disease and drugs to treat virus infections. In August 2008, he was inducted into the Medicinal Chemistry Hall of Fame of the American Chemical Society at the National American Chemical Society Meeting in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In 2009, he was awarded the Volwiler Research Achievement Award for research in the pharmaceutical sciences at the National American Association Colleges of Pharmacy (AACP). In 2015, he was inducted into the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) at the California Institute Technology in Pasadena, California. In 2022, The Memphis Business Journal's 24th Annual Health Care Heroes Award was presented to Dr. Wei li and Dr. Miller that salutes individuals, companies, and organizations for their contributions to improving health care in Memphis and the Mid South.
Disseminating his findings, Dr. Miller has authored and co-authored over 480 publication and reports on scientific articles in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry, Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and other scholarly publications. He has 16 book chapters and given 343 presentations at national and international meetings and has over 100 patents and patent applications. Prior to teaching in Tennessee, he spent over two decades as a professor and chair of the medicinal chemistry department at The Ohio State University between 1969 and 1992. There he studied dopamine and norepinephrine analogs with Drs. Popat Patil, Norman Uretsky and Dennis Feller. He was selected as an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Fellow and honored for fundamental studies on the structural and stereo-chemical requirements of adrenergic drugs interacting in the CNS and peripheral nervous systems (2001).
A graduate of the University of Kansas, Dr. Miller received a Bachelor of Science in pharmacy. He also earned a Doctor of Philosophy under the mentorship of Dr. Wendell L. Nelson from the University of Washington. He remains aware of developments in his field as a member of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists. Dr. Miller is also a member, former chair of the medicinal chemistry division, and former committee member of the American Chemical Society.
