With more than five decades of excellence in aerospace engineering and over 3700 hours of flying, Dr. Richmond has earned distinction as an aerospace engineer with Ford Aerospace and Brunswick Defense. In this capacity, he focuses his efforts on mechanical and aerospace engineering. Additionally, he is a valued member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Having spent his career utilizing his knowledge of aircraft and missile design to protect the United States from foreign threats, Dr. Richmond began his professional journey working with the Richfield Oil Corporation and was an aerodynamicist for the Lockheed Aircraft Company (now the Lockheed Martin Corporation) in 1952. While pursuing his education, he also served as a teaching and research assistant for the California Institute of Technology from 1952 until 1957. He subsequently functioned as an assistant group leader for aeronautical performance with the Douglas Aircraft Company in 1957 until taking a role as the director of engineering and advisory development with Ford Aerospace in 1959. Dr. Richmond continued his career as an adjunct associate professor for the University of California, Irvine School of Engineering in 1987, becoming the director of engineering for Brunswick Defense in 1988.
Added to these roles, Dr. Richmond lent his expertise as a flight instructor to the Young Eagles Program. Out of his continued passion for aviation, he served as a reserve lieutenant for the Orange County Sheriff's Department from 1976 until 2012, working with children from the age of seven to 17 to encourage their interest in flight. He also authored a 171-page article, "A Lifetime of Aviation," about his experiences.
Among his professional accomplishments, Dr. Richmond experimentally proved that skin friction force on long, slender cylinders was several times that on flat plates at Mach 5.8 for both laminar and turbulent boundary layers, which was the focus of his doctoral thesis. He was also a distinguished subgroup leader for the NATO Industrial Advisory Group #16 in Brussels, Belgium from 1984 until 1986. In 2022, he was named Man of the Year for Business Leaders and Professionals in the Top 100 Registry.
Carrying on his interest in airplanes and flying from his youth, Dr. Richmond earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, Berkley in 1952. Following this achievement, he attained a Master of Science in aeronautical engineering in 1953 and gained a Doctor of Philosophy in the same area of study in 1957, both from the from the California Institute of Technology. Looking to the future, Dr. Richmond intends to continue to fly planes and conduct maintenance on his own aircraft.
