INDIANAPOLIS, IN, July 25, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Luis A. Palacio, PE, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. With more than two decades of excellence in mechanical engineering, scientific research, and business development, Dr. Palacio has earned distinction as the executive director and chief executive officer for the Diversity and Innovation Institute, a non-profit organization that aims to provide STEM education resources for diverse students in an inclusive and equitable manner and increase diversity in the STEM workforce. It also provides opportunities for students to receive training in product development and generating solutions to everyday human problems. Having joined the institute in 2013 as the director of programs and research, he has focused his efforts on staff, program and community service development.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Palacio served as a design and application engineer with General Electric in 2000 and became a research assistant for Indiana University–Purdue University Indianapolis in 2006. During this period, he also was the director of research and development for Alivio Medical Center from 2013 until 2016.
Over the course of his career, Dr. Palacio contributed a wealth of research to his field, including co-authoring "A Novel Approach for High Speed Wireless Pre-Fall Detection Multisensory System," featured at the IEEE 57th International Midwest Symposium on Circuits and Systems Proceedings in 2014. He has conducted research experiments at some of the United States Department of Energy's national laboratories, including the Argonne National Laboratory and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory. These works have earned him numerous grants and scholarships, including two GK-12 Fellowships from the National Science Foundation. In 2023, he was honored with the Indiana Academy of Science Fellow Award.
To prepare for his career in engineering, Dr. Palacio earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez in 1999 and a Bachelor of Science in physics from Purdue University Fort Wayne in 2004. Following these achievements, he attained a Master of Science in physics in 2007 and a Doctor of Philosophy in the same area of study in 2020, both from Purdue University in Indianapolis. Well-qualified in his field, he is a licensed professional engineer and holds a Six Sigma green belt.
Within the coming years, Dr. Palacio intends to grow the business of the Diversity and Innovation Institute to establish its legacy and sustainability.
