Drawing on years of professional expertise, Dr. Haney presently excels as an assemblywoman in the Fairbanks North Star Borough and as legislative research staff to the Alaska Legislature including Rep. Lora Reinbold and Rep Mike Prax. Dr. Haney came to Alaska after serving as faculty at Eastern Illinois University, St Mary's College, University of Notre Dame, and Washington State University, and was appointed as the Director of the Center for Economic Education at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. While running a variety of programs aimed at teaching Alaska's students, she began to work on a novel idea of publicly funding homeschool programs through correspondence. She facilitated the creation of publicly funded correspondence programs. In addition, she worked on the creation of the foundation formula used to fund education in the state of Alaska. She wrote legislation that instituted parent's rights in Alaska's statutes, and has been a stalwart advocate of education reform.
In addition to her work in the area of education, Dr. Haney has worked diligently with citizen groups to constrain the size and scope of government. Early in her time in Alaska, she worked with a citizen group to institute a cap on local revenue. Her current efforts involve the revision of the comprehensive planning process to ensure the rights of property owners are included in that process.
Dr. Haney works with various citizen groups such as the Interior Taxpayer Association, Commonwealth North, the Greater Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, the North Pole Chamber of Commerce, and the Grange. She is politically active, serving on the executive board of the Fairbanks Republican Woman and House District 33. She has been an occasional writer in various news outlets ranging from the Anchorage Daily News to various academic publications. One of her goals is to continue to work on education reform and property rights in the state, and help the state navigate through challenging fiscal times.
