Ms. Colson has accumulated decades of experience in education as both a teacher and reading specialist and, since 2012, has served as the owner, president, and chief executive officer at Colson Business Systems Inc. in Valdosta, Georgia. Taking over the office equipment business after the passing of the company's founder, her husband Larry Walton Colson, her company specializes in various office solutions for clients, which range from copiers, printers, scanners, and fax machines to service requests.
Throughout her professional career, Ms. Colson has been employed by the West Gordon Elementary School in Valdosta as a remedial reading teacher and by Valdosta State College as a supervisor of education students, educational lobbyist, and guest lecturer. She also spent over 35 years as a developer of Title I reading materials for the Valdosta City School Systems and several additional years as the head of Title I reading program teachers. Moreover, Ms. Colson enjoyed presenting at professional in-service training programs for the Valdosta City School Systems.
Civically engaged, Ms. Colson served as the secretary, vice president, president, and steering committee member of the Valdosta State College Alumni Association, as a member and past president of the Valdosta Symphony Guild, as a member of the Valdosta Civic Roundtable, and as a volunteer with the Cancer Crusade. She also served in various committee roles, including the G.A.E. Political Action Committee, and is active as a member of the Town and Country Garden.
Ms. Colson graduated from Valdosta State College with a Bachelor of Science in 1968 and a Master of Education in 1972. She also received certification as a reading specialist. As a part of her professional commitments, Ms. Colson has been active with various professional organizations, including the Pierce County Association of Educators, and in multiple roles with the Valdosta Association of Educators, the National Education Association, and the Georgia Association of Educators.
In recognition of her success and distinguished tenure in the classroom, Ms. Colson received two Teacher of the Year Awards from Valdosta City Schools and was named as the Reading Teacher of the Year by Valdosta City Schools. Among other accolades, she was named as Georgia's Outstanding Young Woman of the Year.
