Prior to establishing himself as a consultant, Mr. Bettelheim spent just under two decades with New York Psychotherapy and Counseling Center (NYPCC). Hired in 2000 he rose to the roles of the director of program operations, general counsel, and chief compliance officer in 2007. During his distinguished tenure, Mr. Bettelheim successfully took NYPCC from being a somewhat unremarkable organization to excelling in behavioral health as the state's largest provider of children's Article 31 outpatient behavioral health services. Under his management NYPCC's net worth rose from approximately $14 million to over $160 million.
A servant leader who prefers to focus on the mission instead of the accolades, Mr. Bettelheim has found the most success in listening and taking suggestions to solve problems. Looking toward future success, he aspires to utilize his expertise and devote it entirely to serving nonprofit health care organizations. Mr. Bettelheim also aims to have his consultancy continually expand and serve as his legacy.
Mr. Bettelheim began his legal career as an assistant district attorney for the Nassau County District Attorney's Office in 1980. Subsequently, he served as the chief of its civil forfeiture unit from 1987 to 1988. Turning to private practice, Mr. Bettelheim garnered experience as an associate attorney and a Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act and Superfund coverage specialist at Sheft, Wright & Sweeney between 1988 and 1989. He was a senior litigation associate at Herzfeld & Rubin PC from 1989 to 1997 as one of the first litigators in the firm's personal injury division. Mr. Bettelheim spent the next three years as the owner of a full-service legal practice, the Law Offices of Eric B. Bettelheim LLC, before joining the NYPCC.
Outside the courtroom, Mr. Bettelheim spent 30 years as a theater actor, singer, and performer. Among his most notable performances, he performed a solo cabaret act in Manhattan, New York, in 2000. Most recently, he played Judge Wargrave in Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None" with the St. Bart's Players. Moreover, Mr. Bettelheim served in numerous other roles in musical productions and was a writer and performer of audience participation murder mystery shows.
Civically, Mr. Bettelheim served on the advisory board for QualityMD from 2020 to 2021. He also volunteered in pro bono collective bargaining negotiations on behalf of the Village Light Opera Group and was a volunteer attorney for several amateur theater organizations throughout New York. Furthermore, Mr. Bettelheim is a former board member and Chairman of St. Bart's Players.
Mr. Bettelheim graduated from Forest Hills High School. He subsequently earned a Bachelor of Arts in chemistry from Lafayette College and a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Washington University. He also graduated from the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center Cabaret Symposium. As a part of his professional commitments, Mr. Bettelheim is active as a member of the American College of Healthcare Executives and the Healthcare Leaders of New York.
