Roser, DMD, MD, FACS, FRCS(Ed), Delos Hill Chair and Professor of Surgery, Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery, Emory University School of Medicine has been included in Marquis Who's Who. Leveraging more than four decades of excellence in academic surgery, Dr. Roser has earned distinction as the Delos Hill Chair and Professor of Surgery in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Department of Surgery at the Emory University School of Medicine. Since 2004, he has focused his efforts on continuing to build the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition to the residency training program, the program also provides care to patients at the Emory teaching hospitals, Egleston Children's Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital. He is also a valued member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons, the American Association Of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons and a Fellow in the Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh among many other professional organizations.
Outside of his primary career efforts, since 1991 Dr. Roser has led surgical teams supported by Healing the Children NE, which have worked with local hosts in Central America, South America, Mexico and Thailand to perform surgery for children born with cleft lip/palates. Since 2012 his team has worked with the Sirari Rotary Club in Santa Cruz, Bolivia traveling yearly to train and work with local surgeons and others to provide care for children born with clefts.
Dr. Roser serves as Chair and Program Liaison for the American College of Surgeons Advisory Council for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and as a Co-chair for the Education Subcommittee for American College of Surgeons/Operation Giving Back. He is also the Chair for the Committee on Global Surgery for the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Foundation, a Permanent Council member of the Global Alliance for Surgical, Obstetric, Trauma and Anesthesia Care representing the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Foundation and Vice Chair of the Finance Committee of the Association of Academic Global Surgery. Added to these positions, he is on the Board of Directors for the Head and Neck Cancer Alliance as well as the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Political Action Committee. Additionally, since 2001 he has been an active member of the Tactical Critical Care Trauma Team for the National Disaster Medical System in the Administration for Strategic Preparedness & Response, U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
Prior to his current role, Dr. Roser began his career in 1973 as Assistant Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for the University of California Los Angeles School of Dentistry and Assistant Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Harbor General Hospital in Torrance, California. In 1976, he became the Director of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the San Bernardino Medical Center in San Bernardino, California and Associate Professor at UCLA and Loma Linda Schools of Dentistry. During this time, he also served as the Medical Director at the Ontario Motor Speedway where he led the facility's medical team providing emergency medical care for the spectators, drivers and crew members of racing events including Indy cars, NASCAR, NHRA and live concerts including Cal Jam II. In 1979 he assumed the role as Chief of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Assistant Dean for Hospital Affairs at the Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine in Alton, Illinois. During his time at SIU he began a General Practice Residency Program at St. Mary's Hospital in East St. Louis. In 1981 he was recruited to join the faculty at Columbia University College of Dental Medicine and College of Physicians and Surgeons in New York City where he was appointed as Professor of Clinical Dentistry with joint appointments in the Division of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery. In the College of Dental Medicine, he was appointed as the Director of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Assistant Dean for Hospital Affairs and at The Presbyterian Hospital, Chief of the Dental Service. In 1998 he became the George Guttmann Professor of Clinical Craniofacial Surgery at the Columbia University College of Dentistry and College of Physicians and Surgeons. Dr. Roser also served as the founding Director of the Lang Youth Medical Program based at the NewYork-Presbyterian Ambulatory Care Network. The vision for this six-year science enrichment program is to inspire and prepare students in the Washington Heights and Inwood school district to gain acceptance into college and become future leaders who give back to their communities. In 2000 he was appointed as Director of Graduate Medical Education for the New York-Presbyterian Hospital. In 2004 he was recruited to join the faculty at the Emory University School of Medicine as Chief of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in the Department of Surgery and was named the DeLos Hill Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2008. He stepped away from the Chief's role in 2020 and is currently the Residency Program Director in the Division which has twenty-one residents and Chief of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Service at Grady Memorial Hospital. Also, at Emory he is the Chair of the Global Surgery Committee, the Faculty Advisor for the Emory Global Perioperative Global Alliance and the Emory Chapter of Remote Area Medicine, (RAM), and sits on the Board of Advisors for the Emory Office of Global Health and Equity. For the School of Medicine, he serves on the Admissions Committee, Curriculum Committee, and School of Medicine Faculty Appointments and Promotions Committee.
Prior to embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Roser earned a Bachelor of Arts from Middlebury College in 1965. Following this achievement, he attained a Doctor of Dental Medicine from the Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1968 and a Doctor of Medicine from Harvard Medical School in 1972. He completed a residency program in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1971 and was a clinical fellow in oral and maxillofacial surgery with the Harvard School of Dental Medicine at the same time. He then served as an assistant resident in general surgery with Massachusetts General Hospital until 1973.
Dr. Roser has received a number of awards for his humanitarian service including in 2003 the American Dental Association Oversees Volunteer Award, a Presidential Citation from the Republic of Ecuador in 2005, the William J. Geis Award for Distinguished Achievement in Humanitarian Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2006, the Humanitarian Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2011, the Distinguished Service Award from the International Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in 2019 and the Humanitarian Award from the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2022. Also, in 2022, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from the Universidad De Aquinas, Santa Cruz Bolivia for his humanitarian work in Bolivia providing surgical care for children in Bolivia for over a decade.
He also has been recognized for his contributions to education including the Maislin Award for Achievements in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery from New York University College of Dentistry in 2010, the Donald Osbon Educator of the Year Award from the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons in 2017 and in 2022 he received the Mentoring Award from the Emory University School of Medicine. In 2020 he was inducted as a Fellow Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.
Within the coming years, Dr. Roser intends to continue his work helping to facilitate changes in the Emory University School of Medicine Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Residency Training Program and capacity building in the arena of global oral and maxillofacial surgery in low resource areas.
