URBANDALE, IA, July 27, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Guru Rao has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Factors such as position, noteworthy accomplishments, visibility, and prominence in a field are all taken into account during the selection process.
An accomplished educator with decades of experience in chemistry and biochemistry, Dr. Rao presently serves as an emeritus professor at Iowa State University. Over the years, he dedicated himself to the University in numerous positions, including interim vice president for research, associate vice president for research and professor in the Roy J. Carver Department of Biochemistry, Biophysics & Molecular Biology. In his role as interim vice president and chair, Dr. Rao supported the University's research efforts and worked with faculty to obtain federal funding.
During the early stages of his career, Dr. Rao gained valuable expertise as a senior scientist and research fellow for Pioneer Hi-Bred International, Inc. and as a research assistant professor in the University of South Carolina's Department of Chemistry. In conjunction with his work, he contributes to his community through the Alzheimer's Association, and Iowa Public Radio and television. Driven to remain abreast of changes in the field, Dr. Rao aligns himself with the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Society for Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, the Protein Society, and the National Academy of Inventors.
An expert in his field, Dr. Rao holds a Bachelor of Science in chemistry from St. Edmunds College and a Master of Science in organic chemistry from Gauhati University. Subsequently, he expanded upon his professional knowledge, earning a PhD in biochemistry from the University of Mysore and completing a postdoctoral fellowship at Case Western Reserve University's School of Medicine, where he specialized in the structure and function of mouse nerve growth factor. In light of his professional achievements, Dr. Rao was recognized as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors and the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
While his career has been filled with highlights, Dr. Rao takes the most pride in understanding how protein engineering, or the design of proteins, improves the nutritional values of crop plants. This led to him being recognized by the American Association for the Advancement of Science and the National Academy of Inventors. The cornerstone of his success lay in being educated in India in a school owned by Irish Christian brothers; that experience was instrumental in developing his language, thinking, and writing skills. In the coming years, Dr. Rao intends to travel more and explore other countries, as well as serve as a mentor to younger generations.
