Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer works as an assistant general counsel for the Chicago Housing Authority (CHA), a position she has held since 2019. She represents CHA in administrative hearings, state chancery and federal cases, provides advice throughout the departments on how to cope with new local, state and federal regulations and she helps with matters related to the Housing and Urban Development comment period. Moreover, Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer ensures all administrative and admissions plans for public housing and the housing choice voucher are up-to-date for operational purposes.
A municipal not-for-profit corporation governed by a board of commissioners, the CHA was created in 1937 and provides homes to more than 63,000 low-income households.
Before working at the CHA, Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer advocated for injured and disabled social security recipients at Citizens Disability, a social security disability advocacy group. There, she served as an associate attorney from 2017 to 2019 before being promoted to senior associate. During Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer's time with Citizens Disability she saw the issues of housing instability her clients faced, which helped catapult her into her current role at CHA. Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer was also an independent counsel in Chicago between 2011 and 2017, a contract attorney with Cremer Law LLC in Chicago from 2012 to 2014, and an associate at the Law Offices of Vickie Pasley between 2012 and 2013.
Looking toward the future, Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer would enjoy a progression towards the judiciary. She also aspires to help create a network of like-minded individuals interested in providing mentorship to help young people of color succeed professionally.
Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer earned a Bachelor of Arts in international relations and American history at Cornell College in 2006. She earned a paralegal studies and litigation certification at Loyola University of Chicago in 2007 before graduating as a Doctor of Jurisprudence in international law from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2011. While pursuing her law degree, Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer clerked for three law firms in Chicago and Lansing, Michigan, between 2007 and 2011. She also spent a semester abroad. Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer was admitted to practice law in the State of Illinois in 2011.
Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer is a member of Phi Alpha Delta and has served as the president and co-founder of the Alumni of Color Association at Cornell College. She is also an active member of the Chicago Bar Association as a part of her professional commitments.
Honoring her work, Ms. Cunningham-Rimmer was the recipient of a 2020 Young Alumni Achievement Award. She believes much of her success stems from her family's encouragement, particularly her grandfather.
