Dr. Bocko is a devout Christian and pastor who has devoted over a decade to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), recognized as one of the largest Christian denominations in the U.S. As its African national ministries program director, he collaborates with other Lutheran churches throughout African communities in the U.S., involving six caucuses of West, Southern, and Eastern Africans, The Horn of Africans, including Ethiopians and Eritreans, and South Sudanese.
Grateful for the opportunity to be a part of a community of faith in America alongside his family, Rev. Dr. Bocko notably immigrated to the U.S. in 1998. He had pastored and served as the secretary for the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania and was a diocesan youth director for more than 300 congregations in Tanzania. Once in the U.S., Rev. Dr. Bocko initially pastored for the Metro Chicago Synod of Reformation ECLA.
A well-written writer, Rev. Dr. Bocko authored 'Effective Lay Leadership Training' in UMI in 1997. He has also contributed articles to various professional journals and is working on his first book, which already includes more than 200 pages of text.
Rev. Dr. Bocko has been very active in a civic capacity. He served on the Chicago Development Community Advisory Council, a role appointed to him by Chicago's 54th mayor, Richard M. Daley. He was also the secretary of the Developing Communities Project in Chicago and served on the board of directors for Community Development Projects Inc., Chicago Christian Community Organizing Agency. Moreover, Rev. Dr. Bocko was highly influential as a two-term appointed member of the National Council of Churches Committee on Public Education and Literacy of the No Child Left Behind program.
Educated in his home country, Rev. Dr. Bocko earned a Bachelor of Theology from Tumaini University Makumira in the United Republic of Tanzania in 1975. He subsequently earned a Diploma in Social Pedagogics from the University of Kassel in 1979, a Master of Theological Studies from the Wartburg Theological Seminary in 1984, and a Doctor of Philosophy in educational studies from Trinity International University in 1997. Rev. Dr. Bocko received credentials as an ordained pastor with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, North Western Diocese, United Republic of Tanzania, in 1975.
Recognizing his accomplishments, Rev. Dr. Bocko received a Lilly Endowment National Clergy Renewal Program Award in 2008.
