Since 2020, she has served as Counseling Psychology Program Director at William Carey University, where she monitors the admissions and matriculation process of graduate students. In addition, Dr. Burkett serves as a professor of psychology teaching both graduate and undergraduate psychology courses as of 1999. Dr. Burkett also has ongoing research on autism spectrum disorder (ASD.) She initially began her vocation working as a mental health clinician for the Mississippi Department of Mental Health from 1995 until 2017. In her career-related endeavors, Dr. Burkett has authored "An International Study on the Acceptability of Three Interventions for Common Behavioral Challenges Experienced by Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder: Caregivers' Perspectives" in the International Journal of Autism and Related Disabilities in 2020. Regarding career related accomplishments abroad, Dr. Burkett is a member of the Oxford Round Table, Oxford, England in the United Kingdom.
Prior to embarking on her professional journey, Dr. Burkett pursued an education at The University of Southern Mississippi, where she attained a bachelor's degree in psychology in 1992, followed by a master's degree in psychology in 1995. She continued her academic efforts at The University of Southern Mississippi, earning a Doctor of Philosophy in psychology in 1997. As a commitment to her field, she has been licensed as a school psychologist, a clinical intellectual and developmental disabilities therapist, and an ordained minister. Additionally, she has been active with several industry-related organizations, including the National Association of School Psychologists. Likewise dedicated to civic advocacy, Dr. Burkett contributes to the Roderick Clark Foundation, The American National Red Cross, and the Pentecostal Assemblies of the World Inc.
Well-regarded for her contributions to the field, Dr. Burkett has received multiple awards, including the Minority Stipend Award from the National Institute of Mental Health. Among her professional accomplishments, she is most proud to be impacting the lives of numerous individuals as one of the first African Americans who received a doctorate degree in psychology and as one of the first professors to teach a multicultural counseling course at William Carey University. Additionally, Dr. Burkett is elated to have created a program for the ASD community at the Mississippi Department of Mental Health. Reflecting on her career, she attributes much of her success to her Christian faith, drive, dedication, compassion, self-discipline, and personal accountability. Looking toward the future, Dr. Burkett aspires to continue imparting her knowledge and expertise on the next generation of specialists and hopes to be more involved in research projects and discussions on ASD.
