Dr. Pennanen is a scholar and educator who dedicated more than 35 years of her career to teaching a variety of topics in history and the humanities. She attended Bryn Mawr College, graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts in classical and Near Eastern archaeology and Greek in 1977. Dr. Pennanen continued her education at the University of Michigan, earning several grants, fellowships, and academic honors for her scholarship. She was awarded her Master of Arts in classical art and archaeology in 1979 and her Doctor of Philosophy in 1983 after publishing her dissertation on the cult of Bacchus in Roman-era Britain.
She began her teaching career at Tulane University in 1986 and joined the faculty at Arkansas State University the following year, with a courseload focusing on topics in art history and appreciation. Dr. Pennanen remained at Arkansas State University through 1993, and taught introductory courses on ancient painting and Roman art as a guest professor at the University of Michigan in 1992. She became an adjunct at Calumet College of St. Joseph in 1995, rising to become full-time faculty in 2010. At Calumet College of St. Joseph, Dr. Pennanen became a beloved member of faculty, earning outstanding reviews from students and staff and winning awards including Adjunct Teacher of the Year for 2002 and a 2007 Independent Colleges of Indiana Realizing the Dream grant.
In 2023, Dr. Pennanen was granted professor emerita status and stepped down from full-time teaching. She considers her success in education, especially her ability to reach students with unique course offerings and approaches to teaching topics in global history, to be her greatest success. Dr. Pennanen has been published extensively throughout her career both in academic journals and in broader culture projects, including a 2016 anthology book on the impact of "Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood." In her retirement, she looks forward to remaining active in her community as a volunteer for faith-based outreach projects and to devoting more time to environmental justice and childhood literacy programs.
