Finding constant inspiration in the Byzantine period, which spanned between 330 and 1453, Mr. Hijuelos has also been moved by postwar American abstract painting and by the early Italian Renaissance, which heavily focused on 15th-century art. Additionally, Mr. Hijuelos has been profoundly influenced by such distinguished artists as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Ben Nicholson and Al Held.
Throughout the course of his career as an artist, Mr. Hijuelos has been featured in numerous solo and group exhibitions at galleries in Mexico, New York, Massachusetts, New Mexico, Florida and Connecticut. Looking toward the future, Mr. Hijuelos plans to continue creating his unique and vibrant paintings. He never envisions a day in which he will not hold a paintbrush in his hand.
Mr. Hijuelos' artwork has notably been on display at the Skot Foreman Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, and in the city of San Miguel De Allende, Mexico, for more than a decade. Presently Mr. Hijuelos is affiliated with Intersección Arte Contemporáneo in San Miguel de Allende.
In addition to garnering recognition as an artist, Mr. Hijuelos spent many years as an archeological site supervisor and educator. Mr. Hijuelos has traveled extensively throughout Europe, both as an archaeologist and as an artist.
Known for his contributions as a civic-minded citizen, Mr. Hijuelos is a board member of The Chamber Music Festival of San Miguel, which is recognized as one of Mexico's oldest chamber music festivals. Mr. Hijuelos is also a member of the Cuban Cultural Center of New York.
Born in New York City, Mr. Hijuelos notably served four years in the military in England. He subsequently received a Master of Fine Arts from Brooklyn College in 1973.
To commemorate his accomplishments, Mr. Hijuelos was named as the New York Art Educator of the Year by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Mr. Hijuelos has also been featured in several professional publications, including The New York Times and Architectural Digest.
