Now retired, Mr. Callahan spent the last 13 years of his career serving on the board of commissioners for the Public Housing Authority. During his distinguished tenure, he was instrumental in upgrading and restoring the athletic facilities, swimming pool, and community centers throughout six different public housing communities in Annapolis.
Having utilized his years of experience as the city's former recreation and parks director, Mr. Callahan spent more than 30 years in his role. In his early years, he convinced the mayor and the city council to build the first public swimming pool in 1966. He also formed an outdoor summer basketball league, built a new basketball court complex named in his honor with the assistance of a federal grant, and hired additional employees to help manage the department's expansion. Among many other highlights, Mr. Callahan successfully installed a baseball facility in 2006 in public housing, which was subsequently named in his honor. Moreover, he had become deeply invested in program development to help benefit the community, particularly the African Americans residing in the city.
An alumnus of Washington College, Mr. Callahan earned a Bachelor of Science in psychology and education. He was elected to Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1960. His status in college athletics included All-Conference honors in basketball and All-American in lacrosse. After graduating, he began working in the engineering sector, doing drawings for a local firm. After a short time, Mr. Callahan was appointed to an assistant role with the recreation department.
Mr. Callahan was featured in OutLook by the Bay, a magazine for active adults throughout Maryland. He was also recognized with a Peacemaker Award from the Martin Luther King Jr. Committee of Anne Arundel County for helping the mayor keep the peace after Dr. King's assassination.
