With more than a decade of excellence in epigenetics, molecular biology and human nutrition, Dr. Pérez-Mojica has earned distinction as a postdoctoral research fellow with the Van Andel Institute. Since 2019, he has focused his efforts on laboratory studies regarding mechanistic dissection of epigenetic inheritance and developmental metabolism. He is also a valued member of the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids, the International Society for Developmental Origins of Health and Disease and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.
Before starting his present fellowship, Dr. Pérez-Mojica served as a community health educator for the Secretaría de Agricultura Ganadería, Desarrollo Rural, Pesca y Alimentación in 2010 for a year. He then became a technician for the University of Southampton in the United Kingdom in 2015. Among his professional accomplishments, he is proud to have received a Pathway-to-Independence Award from the Van Andel Institute's Metabolism and Nutrition (MeNu) Program. He also developed a new method to study early embryo development, research for which was published in a peer-reviewed journal for Cell Genomics in 2023.
To prepare for his scientific career, Dr. Pérez-Mojica earned a Bachelor of Science in human nutrition from the Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro in 2010 and a Master of Science in molecular biomedicine from the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN in 2014. Following these achievements, he attained a Doctor of Philosophy in human development and health from the University of Southampton in 2019.
Looking to the future, Dr. Pérez-Mojica intends to establish his own lab and launch his independent career as a researcher. Having been interested in how nutrients affect human cells from a young age, he is committed to determine ways to improve society by understanding problems in health or how a community rises.
