CHAPEL HILL, NC, August 22, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Josh Chen, PhD, has been inducted into Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. Dr. Chen has found tremendous success as a faculty member at the University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill. Having served as the director of the UNC Department of Chemistry X-ray Crystallography Core Laboratory from 2018, he has since become a research associate professor within the department, teaching graduate-level x-ray crystallography courses to students.
As an expert in single-crystal small-molecule x-ray crystallography and powder XRD, Dr. Chen collaborates with active research groups and maintains and operates the x-ray diffractometer. Looking toward future success, he plans to expand the capabilities at his facility and continue providing progressive services using the latest technology. Dr. Chen also envisions collaborating with various groups and networking at professional conferences to gain added expertise and become more recognized nationally and internationally for his professional contributions, and hosts University-wide annual crystallographic symposium to stimulate cross-disciplinary collaborations and discussions.
Before joining UNC, Dr. Chen was a technical editor for the Journal of Chemical Crystallography from 2012 to 2023. He also devoted his time and expertise to Indiana University (IU) in Bloomington as an assistant and then associate scientist and crystallographer between 2011 and 2018. While in Indiana, Dr. Chen enjoyed working with a professor from the university's geology department, through which they were successful in studying minerals found on Mars that also exist on Earth, and discovered their structural change with inclusion and exclusion of water molecules in accordance with Mars Sol, and therefore affecting humidity in Martian atmosphere. Prior to serving in these capacities, he notably completed his postdoctoral fellowship at IU from 2010 to 2011.
Civically, Dr. Chen has volunteered his time at a local science fest and book club focusing on diversity, equity, and inclusion. He also frequently contributes to the American Crystallographic Association.
Dr. Chen is highly educated, having earned a Bachelor of Science in organic chemistry from the University of Massachusetts in Dartmouth in 2004 and a Doctor of Philosophy in physical chemistry from Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts, in 2010.
As an active member of his professional community, Dr. Chen has served as the chair-elect of the American crystallographic Association's Service Special Interest Group in 2023 and will chair in 2024.
