Ms. Bussone graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in English education from Bradley University in 1971, an Associate of Science from Illinois Central College in 1983, and a Master of Science from the University of Illinois in 1998. She received credentials as a registered nurse and critical care registered nurse in Illinois and as a certified cardiopulmonary resuscitation and advanced cardiac life support instructor.
Apart from her field work, Ms. Bussone held faculty positions. She was the assistant to the director at the University of Illinois School of Medicine Library in Peoria from 1972 to 1973. She also spent 10 years teaching for a local school system, teaching homebound students either in the hospital or at home recovering. During this time, Ms. Bussone began considering a new career in nursing.
Now retired, Ms. Bussone enjoyed a long and successful career in health care and nursing in various progressive roles. Beginning as a staff nurse at a local hospital, she also garnered experience at a local family practice clinic, pulmonary office, internal medicine office, and several hospitals caring for patients in intensive care, the medical-surgical unit, and more. During the latter half of her profession, Ms. Bussone served as a critical care nurse at Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, Illinois, from 1990 to 1998. Additionally, she became recognized as the first adult nurse practitioner to provide care at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria between 1998 and 2018. Having paved the way for other practitioners, she was responsible for mentoring and precepting nurse practitioner students. Ms. Bussone subsequently spent another four years continuously working for the hospital on an as-needed basis.
Through her community, Ms. Bussone is active in the Mount Hawley Country Club, the Creve Coeur Club, and the Hyde Park Tennis Club.
Active in her professional community, Ms. Bussone is a member and past president of her local chapter of the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. She was a member of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Critical Care Medicine. She credits her success and longevity in the industry to her passion for helping others.
