A skilled architect and market leader with specialties in project and client development for more than thirty years, Mr. Leissner recently has earned distinction as principal at Hoefer Welker. Having joined the firm in 2017 as vice president, he has continued his focus on developing business and client relations while leading a variety of project types in the healthcare, education, and life sciences building sectors. He engages universities, colleges, academic medical centers, health systems, community hospitals, real estate developers, and physician groups and leads designs on a variety of healthcare and educational facilities, including but not limited to medical schools, acute care, surgical and outpatient care, women's and children's, cancer, psychiatric and medical offices. Additionally, he is a valued member of the Urban Land Institute, American Institute of Architects, American College of Healthcare Executives, and Association of Medical Facility Professionals, among other professional organizations.
Prior to joining Hoefer Welker, Mr. Leissner in 1989 began his career as technical designer with Leo A Daly in Los Angeles. He subsequently served as associate vice president for RTKL Associates' Dallas office in 1993, working on the development of a healthcare studio as a member of the office's newly-formed healthcare group. He was a founding partner for Jonathan Bailey Associates in 1998. The firm focused on crafting creative design solutions for the healthcare facilities, establishing successful offices in Dallas, Orlando, London, and Hong Kong.
Establishing Ellerbe Becket's Dallas office in 2004, Mr. Leissner was a senior associate for the firm before it was acquired by AECOM. He accepted a director position at KMD architects in 2008 and led project development for the firm's work on the Dallas campus of Children's Health and participated in design competitions while also leading business development efforts for project work at academic medical centers. Following this time, he was vice president of CannonDesign, expanding the firm's brand into health and education practices in Texas from 2013 until 2015. He then was a health and education practice leader for Gensler in 2015.
To prepare for his professional journey as a registered architect, Mr. Leissner earned a Bachelor of Environmental Design from Texas A&M University in 1989 during which time studied abroad in Italy and Germany. Also dedicated to civil and community advocacy, he lends his expertise as the chair of the council for health, education and life sciences and the membership committee for the Urban Land Institute Dallas-Fort Worth District. He currently is a board member for Dallas Community Lighthouse, now Kids-U, to address the crisis of children in Dallas County not completing their education. He also has been a member of the board of directors and a think tank founder for the Fetal Health Foundation since 2020 and is a member of the programming committee for the Association of Medical Facility Professionals of North Texas. He also has volunteered his time with the interior design advisory board for the El Centro campus of Dallas College.
Throughout his career, Mr. Leissner was fortunate to develop his professional skills on an international scale, collaborating on projects in the United Kingdom, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Qatar, and Hong Kong, along with many other regions. Within the coming years, he would like to become a partner with Hoefer Welker and continue to contribute to the firm's success. Transitioning to work as a consultant when he retires, Mr. Leissner will be able to spend more time traveling and exploring new places around the globe.
