Mr. Forrest is a retired nurse and nursing educator who dedicated his career to fostering excellence in the health sciences. His career began while serving in Vietnam as a member of the United States Marine Corps as a Navy Corpsman. After being called to his commanding officer's office while in the field, Mr. Forrest was presented with a document from the United States Bureau of Naval Personnel announcing his selection to participate in the Navy Enlisted Nursing Education Program, which provided tuition support to qualified enlisted candidates interested in pursuing careers in clinical nursing. He enrolled at the University of California Los Angeles, describing his initial experience as "culture shock" after his time in Vietnam. Mr. Forrest graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, becoming the school's first male undergraduate nursing alumni.
Throughout his career in health sciences, Mr. Forrest continued to advance his education, pursuing continuing education and specialized training opportunities as well as graduate-level study. In 2001, he was awarded a Master of Science in Nursing by the University of Phoenix and became a member of Sigma Theta Tau Nursing Honor Society and a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus as well as a member of the American Legion. He found long-term career success in clinical settings, but discovered his calling in academia and grew to become a beloved nursing instructor at several institutions. Early in his teaching career, Mr. Forrest was a nursing professor at California State University San Bernardino, and when he retired from education, he was shaping the next generation of clinical professionals as professor at a private licensed vocational nurse school.
Mr. Forrest has been the recipient of numerous awards and accolades for his service to patients, students, and the United States armed forces, including a healthcare proficiency award. He considers his military service to be one of the highlights of his career, and he is proud to have begun his journey as an E-2 enlisted person, the second-lowest rank, ending as an O-5 commander upon retirement. Mr. Forrest credits his success to dedication, integrity, and understanding his goals, and looks forward to continuing to have a positive impact on his community in retirement.
