An accomplished clinician and educator with decades of experience in child and adolescent psychology, Dr. Barish excels in several different roles. In addition to working as a clinical professor at Weill Cornell Medicine, he is a member of the faculty of the Westchester Center for the Study of Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy, the Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy Training Program at the William Alanson White Institute, and Yale Alumni College. Dr. Barish is also a visiting professor at Huazhong University of Science and Technology in Wuhan, China, an adjunct supervisor at Yeshiva University's Ferkauf Graduate School of Psychology, and he is in private practice. In addition to his work in clinical and educational settings, Dr. Barish is an associate editor of the Journal of Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychotherapy and a member of the board of directors for Section II of Division 39 of the American Psychological Association.
Throughout his career, Dr. Barish has contributed to numerous publications. He is the author of "Emotions in Child Psychotherapy: An Integrative Framework," "How to Be a Better Child Therapist: An Integrative Model for Therapeutic Change," and "Pride and Joy: A Guide to Understanding Your Child's Emotions and Solving Family Problems." Pride and Joy was winner of the 2013 International Book Award and the 2013 Eric Hoffer Book Award. Pride and Joy also earned a Gold Medal from Mom's Choice Awards and a Silver Medal from the National Parenting Publications Awards.
Dr. Barish's recent journal articles include "On the Role of Empathy in Child Development and Psychotherapy: What is Empathy and How Does it Help?" and "The Importance of Affective Neuroscience for Child Psychotherapy." He has presented workshops to many professional organizations, for example, at the Wuhan Mental Health Center, the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, and the Appalachia Psychoanalytic Society. Before embarking on his professional journey, Dr. Barish earned a bachelor's degree in philosophy and psychology from Yale University and a PhD in clinical psychology from The New School for Social Research.
