Dr. Schein is a highly successful attorney, consultant, educator, public speaker, and bestselling author who sold real estate to work his way through an MBA and a law degree. Upon completion of law school, he joined Shell Oil Company, where he worked in three states in three years. He then moved to a management position with Tenneco Oil Company, later serving as employment counsel. In 1987, he entered private law practice and in 1989, became the President and General Counsel at Claremont Management Group, Inc. Based in Houston, Dr. Schein's firm specializes in providing services that focus on productivity and help organizations grow. Among various services, Mr. Schein and his team of experts excel in management and human resources consulting and training, dispute resolution, diversity, evaluation, equal employment opportunity, and much more. They also specialize in assisting start-up companies in developing their initial human resources infrastructure.
In addition to his corporate career, Dr. Schein has been teaching at the Cameron School of Business at the University of Saint Thomas in Houston since 2013. He is now a Full Professor and Cameron Endowed Chair of Management & Marketing. He presently teaches management, business law, and business ethics courses to graduate and undergraduate students. Dr. Schein also served as the director of graduate programs for six years until 2022 and has been active on numerous committees on campus. He previously taught courses at Virginia State University, the University of Richmond, the University of Mary Washington, Central Michigan University, and National-Louis University.
Among other noteworthy roles, Dr. Schein has served as an outside consultant and attorney for Wordmark from 2005 to 2008. He has also spoken publicly at many seminars and training sessions throughout the U.S. and hosted the daily radio program "It's Your Job!" in Richmond, Virginia, from 2008 to 2009. During an earlier stage of his career, Dr. Schein presented a weekly, one-hour show on public radio covering the arts in Philadelphia, "The Arts Menagerie."
A frequently published author, Dr. Schein published 'American Cities Held Hostage: Public Stadiums and Pro Sports Franchises' in a 2017 edition of the Richmond Public Interest Law Review. He also released two books, "The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures" in 2018 and his bestselling book, "Bad Deal for America" in 2022, which received a Bronze Medal from the Global Book Awards in 2022. Dr. Schein intends to publish three additional books. As a tenured scholar, he has also authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in academic journals. He is recognized as an Emeritus Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Cultural Management, having served in that position from 2019 to 2022.
Dr. Schein has been recognized with interviews on television on Houston TV Channel 13, ABC. He was also featured on the radio on KSEV 700 AM in Houston every Wednesday afternoon in 2016, speaking about current business and employment topics. Moreover, Dr. Schein was quoted in numerous national and local publications for his contributions.
A leader in his civic community, Dr. Schein has been active on the Greater Heights Area Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors and as a former Director of the Asian Chamber of Commerce of Houston, for over a decade. He has also served as a patron member of the Houston Grand Opera and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston. Additionally, Dr. Schein is a life member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo.
Highly educated, Dr. Schein graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in transportation economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1973, a Master of Business Administration from the University of Virginia in 1975, a Doctor of Jurisprudence from the University of Houston Law Center in 1977, and a Doctor of Philosophy in higher education administration from the University of Virginia in 2005. He has been admitted to practice by the Texas and Virginia Bar Associations and received credentials as a licensed Real Estate Broker in both Texas and Virginia.
To leverage his expertise, Dr. Schein has been active with several professional organizations, including the Academy of Legal Studies in Business, the Houston Council on Foreign Relations, the World Affairs Council of Houston, and the Texas Bar Association. He has also been recognized as an educator member of the Greater Houston Business Ethics Roundtable and the Asia Society in Houston.
Honoring his accomplishments, Dr. Schein received a Service Award in 2021 and the Research Award in 2021 from the University of Saint Thomas. He credits his success as a first generation college graduate to his hardworking parents. They always emphasized the importance of education and instilled discipline in him and his six siblings.
