Dr. Sper had a very simple upbringing. He was born and raised in the city of Sao Sebastiao, state of Sao Paulo, Brazil. He grew up breeding dogs with his parents, which sparked a passion for animals and fascination for biology. On the weekends, Dr. Sper and his father Clinton de Abreu Sper would go snorkeling and spear hunting, a habit that further fueled Dr. Sper's curiosity for biology and different forms of life. His mother, Sandera Maria Bueno Sper taught him the value of faith and respect for all kinds of living form within this planet.
Dr. Sper earned a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Universidade Federal de Uberlândia in Brazil in 2008. Following this achievement, he underwent a clinical internship in the theriogenology program at the North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2010 and completed a clinical residency in the theriogenology program there in 2012. During this time Dr. Sper spent countless days and nights working in a veterinary hospital, while spending every second of his limited free time in a research lab. This period further solidified his interest in pursuing a scientific career. He subsequently gained a Doctor of Philosophy in comparative biomedical science and molecular cell biology from the same institution in 2017, where he learned the foundation of modern gene editing using tools such as CRISPR-Cas9 and TALENs, resulting in different peer-reviewed publications of novel genetically modified swine models for translational research. To further deepen his knowledge, he also completed a post-doctoral program in maternal-fetal biology and regenerative medicine at the University of California, San Francisco in 2021. Since completion of his extensive research training, Dr. Sper has served as Senior Scientist in private research institutions such as Genedit and Mammoth Biosciences. Among his professional accomplishments, he has won national and international research awards from various university symposia and conferences.
Within the coming years, Dr. Sper intends to focus on deepening his knowledge of genetic diseases and gene editing technologies with the hope of creating opportunities to change the lives of people with devastating genetic diseases one day.
