Prior to attending law school, Ms. Franco pursued an artistic path. She received a Bachelor of Arts in Advertising in 1988 from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, and then proceeded to further study advertising design and photography at ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, California. After several years, she attended law school, earning a Juris Doctor at American University Washington College of Law, in Washington, D.C., in 1995. Soon after she was licensed to practice law by the State Bar of California.
Ms. Franco is of Apache and Navajo descent and is among the 0.03% of Native American attorneys practicing in California. Within the first decade of her law career, she was an attorney fellow at the California Indian Legal Services in Escondido, CA from 1998 to 2000; from there, she went on to practice as an attorney at Children's Law Center of California in Monterey Park, CA from 2000 to 2015 and then served as judge pro tem for the Los Angeles Superior Court from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, she served as a member of the Federal Bar Association and the National Association of Counsel for Children, and remains affiliated with the California Lawyers Association and the Volunteer Lawyer's Association.
Since 2015, Ms. Franco has attained cases by client referrals where she continued to focus on her areas of expertise in federal Indian law, child abuse, education law, transactional law and juvenile dependency. In honor of her accomplishments in the aforementioned fields, she was presented with an Award of Excellence in Federal Indian Law for her extensive handling of matters involving the Indian Child Welfare Act. Of her many accolades, her trial skills in the courtroom, along with being the first in her family to attend university and law school, fill her with a great sense of accomplishment.
In 2013, Ms. Franco tapped back into her artistic side and started her own business, The Bubble Asylum. For the past 10 years, she has produced whimsical, hand-crafted bath soaps, body lotions, bath bombs, shea butter body mousse, and sugar and salt scrubs using nothing but the finest, purest ingredients. As an animal lover, she never tests her products on animals and spends her time volunteering at animal rehabilitation and rescue groups, such as the Pickle Pants Dog Rescue, Love Leo Rescue, Love Habitat Rescue, and Too Many Bunnies Rabbit Rescue, which she has been involved with since 2010.
Outside of her primary endeavors, Ms. Franco remains connected with the Phi Alpha Delta community, and is a former skater with the Los Angeles Derby Dolls, Southern California's premier all-female, banked track roller derby league. Following a fall accident in 2013 which left Ms. Franco with devastating injuries, she took leave not only from roller derby but from her law practice although she maintains her California bar card. Since then, she has focused on The Bubble Asylum, Inc. while also pursuing and finding solace in other artistic enjoyments, such as singing with her church choir, which helps her rebuild her lung capacity after her lung was punctured and collapsed during her accident; playing classical guitar, which helps her regain her hand coordination as her spinal cord was crushed in the same accident; and being a docent at The Banning Museum in Wilmington, CA, where she has earned the Volunteer Award for her hours spent studying the history of Los Angeles and the development of the Los Angeles Harbor, the busiest port in the United States. Prior to her accident, Ms. Franco ran many marathons, enjoyed fly fishing, biking, stand-up paddleboarding, and hiking, including reaching the summit of Mt. Whitney in California. She is a four time cancer survivor, and is currently a head and neck cancer patient and huge supporter of victims of head and neck cancer.
In her law career, her own creative business, and her personal life, Ms. Franco owes her success to her persistence, tenacity, and determination. Looking ahead to the next five years, her priorities firstly include supporting her two children as they pursue higher education, securing grants to aid animal rescue and rehabilitation facilities, supporting nonprofit organizations who support research on spinal cord injuries and head and neck cancer awareness. She is determined to one day return to her work as a full-time attorney where she will continue her work representing abused children.
