Accumulating decades of success in his industry, Mr. Suits is a professional engineer and an independent consultant who established LDS Geosynthetic Consultant Services in Albany, New York, in 2016. As a certified PDH provider through the Registered Continued Education Provider Program, he specializes in geosynthetics and soils.
Mr. Suits began his career as a soils engineering laboratory supervisor for the New York State Department of Transportation, Geotechnical Engineering Bureau in Albany in 1968. During his distinguished tenure, he oversaw soils foundation testing for NYSDOT projects and the testing and approval of all geosynthetics used for each project. After more than 35 years in his position, Mr. Suits served as the executive director of the North American Geosynthetics Society between 2005 and 2016, responsible for overseeing the North American chapter of the International Geosynthetics Society. As part of his requirements, he also developed seminars and webinars and was influential in organizing conferences and promoting the chapter.
Apart from his full-time endeavors, Mr. Suits taught twice as an adjunct professor at Rensselaer Polytechnical Institute. As a seasoned researcher, he disseminated his work in over 30 scholarly papers and articles, contributed a chapter on geosynthetics for the fourth edition of "Kirk-Othmer Concise Encyclopedia of Chemical Technology," and served as the co-editor of the Geotechnical Testing Journal of the ASTM International.
An alumnus of Clarkson University, Mr. Suits earned a bachelor's degree in 1967 and a Master of Science in chemical engineering in 1969. He remains active in his field as a member of the international committee D18 on soil and rock with the American Society for Testing and Materials, as a board member of the National Academy of Sciences Transportation Research, and as an associate editor of the Transportation Research Board's professional publication.
Recognizing his achievements, Mr. Suits was named as the Engineer of the Year by the NYDOT. He also received an Award of Merit from ASTM International. Grateful for the tremendous support he received from his former employer and the many professional opportunities he had been given, Mr. Suits credits his success to being open-minded regarding the thoughts and opinions of his colleagues. Looking toward the foreseeable future, he aims to continue networking and consulting in science and engineering.
