An accomplished educational administrator with a proven track record of success spanning 20 years, Ms. Smith-Bell presently serves as a principal in the Detroit Public Schools Community District's Pulaski Elementary/Middle School. By leveraging her industry experience, she oversees payroll and scheduling matters, establishes the school's annual budget, and serves as a substitute when needed. Driven to foster excellence in her students, she liaises with staff and professional learning communities in order to better prepare her teachers, conducts continued classroom observations, and meets with parents and families to create a climate and culture in which her students can and want to learn. Prior to obtaining her current position, Ms. Smith-Bell worked as a literacy instructional specialist and as the assistant principal of Pulaski Elementary/Middle School.
During the early stages of her career, Ms. Smith-Bell gained valuable expertise in the Detroit Public School Community District as a literacy instructional specialist and educator for Trix Elementary/Middle School. Likewise, she served as a technology readiness infrastructure grant coach and a Success-for-All reading facilitator. In addition to her work in school administration, she has parlayed her extensive knowledge to others as an adjunct English professor at Wayne County Community College.
Alongside her work, Ms. Smith-Bell dedicates herself to empowering young women and helping those less fortunate through the Salvation Army, JT Angels, Reach One Teach One Mentorship Program, and Girls Empowered and Motivated to Succeed (GEMS). Before embarking on her professional journey, she earned a Bachelor of Science in elementary education and teaching from Wayne State University in 2000. Subsequently, Ms. Smith-Bell expanded upon her professional knowledge by earning a Master of Education with a concentration in reading from her alma mater, a Bachelor of Arts and an EdS in educational leadership and administration from Oakland University, and a certificate in equity and justice leadership from Eastern Michigan University.
Driven to remain abreast of ongoing industry changes, Ms. Smith-Bell aligns herself with the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals. In light of her outstanding body of work, she was named the Detroit Public Schools Rookie Teacher of the Year in 2005 and the DPS Foundation Principal of the Year in 2023.
