Attributing more than two decades to his professional success, he supervises and implements external corrosion direct assessments, oversees indirect inspections, and conducts data analysis and reporting. Dr. Melo Gonzalez also directs the design, installation, troubleshooting, and commissioning of cathodic protection systems and occasionally visits field sites to assist and mentor his technicians with inspections.
Based in Houston, Vecor provides consultancy and engineering services to ensure the safe operation of pipeline networks. For more than 30 years, the organization has provided a myriad of services ranging from pipeline integration studies and pipeline risk assessment to corrosion management, aboveground surveys, and more in order to help maintain the safety of clients' assets. Recognized for his extensive expertise in pipeline integrity implementation and corrosion control for pipelines, Dr. Melo Gonzalez's research has played a significant role both in the industry and academia. Looking toward the future, he envisions teaching at a university on a part-time basis as he once did in Ecuador. He is also considering returning to school to continue his own education and help others within the industry succeed.
Before joining Vecor Pipeline Integrity Inc., Dr. Melo Gonzalez was the president of Corrosion Risk Management Services Ltd. from 2015 to 2020. He also held the title of mechanical integrity engineer at Petroamazonas EP between 2009 and 2020, corrosion technician at Repsol YPF from 2008 to 2009, and project engineer at Engineering Universal Services EUS Cia Ltda and Tectotal Cia Ltda between 2002 and 2008.
As a seasoned researcher, Dr. Melo Gonzalez disseminated his findings by co-authoring peer reviewed papers in the Journal of Pressure Vessels Technology, the International Journal of Pressure Vessels and Piping, and the Journal of Upstream Oil and Gas Technology. He has also been collaborating as a reviewer for the Journal of Pipeline Science and Engineering and the Journal of Process Safety and Environmental Protection. Dr. Melo Gonzalez has presented his work in prestigious international conferences including the 2010 Latincorr Conference, the 2011 Department of Defense (DoD) Corrosion Conference, the 2015 Pipeline Integrity Management Seminar, the 2016 and 2017 Corrosion conference from AMPP (formerly NACE), the 2018 Corrosion Risk Management Conference, and the 2019 NACE Northern Area Western Conference.
As a leader in his community, Dr. Melo Gonzalez is a prominent member of Toastmasters International, which has been instrumental in helping him improve his communication and leadership skills. He has served in different roles within his club including President, Vice President of Education, Secretary, and Sergeant of Arms.
To prepare for his professional career, Dr. Melo Gonzalez earned a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering from National Polytechnic School of Quito in 2002, a Master of Science in corrosion control engineering from the University of Manchester in 2015, and a Doctorate in mechanical engineering with a specialization in pipeline engineering from the Schulich School of Engineering at the University of Calgary in 2020. Adding to his professional expertise, Dr. Melo Gonzalez received credentials from AMPP (Association for Materials Protection and Performance former NACE International Institute) as a cathodic protection technologist (CP3) and a certification as a level II coating inspector and internal corrosion technologist.
In support of his professional accomplishments, Dr. Melo Gonzalez is a member of the Association for Material Protection and Performance (former National Association of Corrosion Engineers) and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. He has also served as an instructor in Direct Assessment, Pipeline Corrosion Integrity Management, and Cathodic Protection for the Association for Materials Protection and Performance (AMPP) since 2013. He frequently volunteers for AMPP by reviewing international standards, participating in educational committees, and reviewing technical papers for various symposiums for their annual conference.
