TYLER, TX, September 14, 2023 /24-7PressRelease/ -- Eleftheria Efthymiou, PhD, has been included in Marquis Who's Who. As in all Marquis Who's Who biographical volumes, individuals profiled are selected on the basis of current reference value. With more than a decade of excellence in structural engineering, Dr. Efthymiou has earned distinction as an Assistant Professor in Civil Engineering at The University of Texas at Tyler. Since 2023, she has focused her efforts on conducting research on structural and earthquake engineering while teaching courses in these areas to undergraduate and graduate students. Additionally, she is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers, the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering, the Association of Civil Engineers of Greece, and the Graduate Women International, among other professional organizations.
Also dedicated to civil advocacy, Dr. Efthymiou has lent her expertise as a member of the London branch of the Engineers for Overseas Development (EfOD). She was also elected as a board member for the Young Engineers Programme of the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering in 2016.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Efthymiou began her career as a civil engineer for Hydromon Consultants Llp. in 2012 and served as a research assistant, teaching assistant and laboratory instructor at City University of London starting in 2016. In 2019 she was awarded her Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from City University of London and following that she took the role of Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Southern Methodist University. She continued her career as an Assistant Professor of Civil Engineering at York College of Pennsylvania in 2021. Throughout her career, she has also contributed a wealth of research to journal publications, conference publications and various invited talks.
In 2018, Dr. Efthymiou won second place in the poster competition at the 20th Young Researchers' Conference of the Institution of Structural Engineers and was nominated as one of the Top 50 Women in Engineering: Returners and Transferrers. Added to these, she received a travel grant award from the National Science Foundation to attend the Natural Hazard Engineering Research Infrastructure summer institute for early-career faculty in 2022.
To prepare for her engineering career, Dr. Efthymiou earned a Master of Engineering in Civil Engineering with a specialization in structural engineering from the Democritus University of Thrace in Greece in 2011, graduating in the top 2% of her class. Following this achievement, she attained a Master of Science in Bridge Engineering from the University of Surrey in the United Kingdom in 2012. She subsequently gained an introductory certificate in teaching higher education from the City, University of London as part of a Master of Arts in academic practice in 2015 and earned a Ph.D. in structural engineering in 2019, writing her thesis on "The effect of multi-angle spatially variable ground motions on the seismic behaviour of cable-stayed bridges."
Looking to the future, Dr. Efthymiou intends to continue to build an extraordinary presence as a researcher and is working towards making a positive impact with her work. She also was recently nominated by the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering for the Early Career Award for her stellar work.
